Thank you everyone for your birthday wishes. Marje let the cat out of the bag, so to speak!

I would greatly appreciate a bit more of L & LL mojo. Part of the reason I've been less present in the evenings is that I'm exhausted. I've been dealing with chronic pain from arthritis in my hips. The pain has escalated in direct proportion to my lack of mobility and as a result, I'm scheduled for hip replacement surgery for my left hip on Monday morning.

So, please send lots of those good vines for a successful surgery and speedy recuperation. I'm not sure how present on the Board I'll be (and if I'm online, just how reliable I'll be given that I'll be taking pain meds). I'll try to not be too loopy!

Be sure to start a condo every day! We'll advise you on how many pain pills you can have. The usual starting dose is 2. We also require your 5p report. But, may your days have no nadirs!

Sorry you have had all that pain from the arthritis in the hips. That sort of pain can be very debilitating.
All the best for a successful operation and speedy recovery. My SIL had one done last year having been quite handicapped from it. She was back to normal quite quickly.....had to do some rehab exercises.....and wishing she had had it done sooner.

Happy belated birthday and tons of successful surgery & feel better vines. My dad got a hip replacement last summer and he is absolutely thrilled with the results. He was barely able to walk a block before the surgery and how he is back to hiking for miles and going on long bike rides. It's a night and day difference. It took a while (and lots of physical therapy) to get to this point, but he is finally pain free after years of physical limitations.

I'll do my best to get word our about how things go. I can't guarantee how well that will work. One of my friends had the same surgery and her messages were, "entertaining."

The surgery is done. I was out of recovery and in my room by around 1:00 EDT. However, a friend had my cell phone and didn't get back here until late in the day. I'm very tech dependent!

Things went well. I've even been up walking and doing all of the recommended in bed exercises. So far, the plan is for a Wed. discharge.

So far I am very disappointed in the clarity and seriousness of your posts. I was really looking forward to some loopy stuff, but you did say that you get sleepy when you get loopy, so I guess we'll just have to make do with picturing you trying to get the walker closer to the bed.....

The loopiness happens with dilaudid. It's fast onset and I want to go to sleep so the sleep and goofiness cancel each other out. The dilaudid is complimented with a long-acting morphine and a medium acting narcotic. I'm more lucid with everything except the dilaudid. People keep saying I sound good. I just want to stay ahead of the pain.

    And I'm editing carefully.

I will say the hospital food -- at least the standard menu -- leaves a lot to be desired. At least there are other options you know the food is questionable if the nurses suggest alternatives!

Maybe your friends can smuggle you in something decent. A little Chinese take-out, perhaps. Just about everything is better than hospital food. I don't know how they make it so bad - it must take effort. I'm not much of a cook but I'm about 1,000 times better than hospital food, even without much effort.

I agree about hospital food. Bleah!!! Interesting that they have alternatives.

Staying ahead of the pain is very wise. I learned that the hard way with my first foot surgery, when I ended up going to the emergency room at 9:00pm the night after surgery because I was in so much pain and couldn't get an answer about whether or not I could double up my pain meds (I could have). I knew better when the next surgery came along four months later!

    Just a quick update....

It seems amazing that surgery was a week ago. I was home by Wed. I'm toddling around using a walker -- talk about making you feel old! Physical therapy comes out to the house and my PT says I'm making very good progress.

Given tat I'm off of work for 6 weeks, I expected the recovery to be much more strenuous. The pain level is very manageable. I'm mostly stiff. There are all sorts of restrictions on movement -- not able to bend past 90 degrees, no twisting, no crossing my legs, sleeping on my back, etc.

There was an issue with my BP due to my night nurse administering IV dilaudid every 4 hours after surgery. Once we got my BP stabilized, what's been interesting is that while my BP was never way high, it was high enough that I took meds. I've not needed meds since surgery. It's weird. It may be a result still taking some narcotics for pain but my BP is very normal.

That's the latest update. Hope all is well here. I've been checking in but I do tend to doze off when I least expect it.

Sending vines for a speedy recovery. The comment about hospital food made me laugh. Four years ago I had back surgery and since I'm a vegetarian, they brought me... canned peas. That's it. I ate a few bites and decided I'd rather be hungry. Last year I had my gallbladder removed and I stayed at a different hospital. The food was much better and they actually had some vegetarian options. If I ever have to have surgery again, hopefully I can go back to the hospital with decent food. ;)

    Keep resting and healing!

Thanks for the update, Sienne. I've been thinking of you and wondering how it's going. Great news on the BP. Perhaps being pain-free (I mean the pain you were suffering before the surgery) is contributing to the improvement. I hope you won't need to go back on the meds after your recovery is complete.

Hi, Sienne! I hope you are continuing to do well. How's your BG?

I'm glad the PT is going well. Is it all going to be in-home ar will you eventually have to travel?

Sorry you had the BP problem. I had no meds for my son's (or daughter's) birth but had a very deep tear with my son. After the sew-up it started hurting and they gave me a shot of some narcotic. Maybe demerol? I don't recall. Anyway, I felt really weird and the nurse slapped on the cuff and said, "Congratulations. You are in shock." I thought that was weird, the last thought I had before I fell asleep and I asked the next day what made her think that having a baby was shocking. I had no idea then she was referring to a very low BP!

Take care of yourself and make sure Gizmo waits on you hand and foot.

Glad to hear an update with details! Sounds like you're on track and doing as well as possible.

The blood pressure being lowered could be a nice little side benefit. I hope it holds for you.

I hope Giz is keeping you company! Feel free to add pics of the little guy since you've got a little extra free time these days!

How did I miss this?! So glad your surgery went well and your recovery is progressing nicely. My mom had a hip replacement a couple of years ago and I remember those restrictions on bending, etc. I went around her apartment arranging the stuff she needed so everything was reachable from a standing position. Fingers and paws crossed that you continue on a smooth and full recovery!

    @Camille and Cyclone --
I was so lucky to have a friend who went through this surgery and sent lots of very practical suggestions. ("Good Housekeeping is not coming to visit. You really can leave things on the kitchen counter so you can reach what you need.") Before the surgery, I moved pots and pans from lower cabinets to a drawer that is easily reachable. There are so many things we do automatically that I just can't do. OTOH, I now have very nifty OT gadgets that allow me to pick things up, put socks on, etc. Getting into the shower and feeling stable enough to take a shower felt like a huge accomplishment. The suggestion of having a bench for the shower was a really good one!

Gizmo has been a constant source of entertainment and affection. Everyone who's been here wants to take him home with them. He has been talkative and cuddly. He's not been terribly far from me although is delighted when I open up the doors to the courtyard and will wander between sitting with me and being outside.

I'm so not used to relying on people for doing things to the point that t's been eye opening. I cannot tell you how grateful I am for the friends who have come to stay with me during this first week or so after surgery. My friends are extraordinary.

Glad you are doing so well! It would be hard for me to accept help too as have always been self sufficient and particular. It's nice the experience was an eye opener for you.
