So I received the Young Again zero on Thursday. I haven't given an injection since the 15th which was my fault. I gave her treats they sent me which I thought were no carb. Obviously they weren't. She's been playing this morning even tackling our other cat for a change!!! Could someone look at her spreadsheet and give me their opinion? I don't think I should be shooting her at these numbers. TIA!!!

    Welcome Rebecca!!

OMG -- your cat was on 16u a day? Were you at least getting tests at the vet's office and were fructosamine levels being run routinely? To say the least, I'm very happy that Mercedes is doing well.

To be honest, I think the canned and freeze dried food you were giving Mercedes is probably lower in carbs than Young Again. The promotional material says it's zero carb but it's got more carbs than that -- it's low carb but not zero carb. Just so you're aware, if you are planning to keep Mercedes on YA food, you will be limited with regard to which approach to dosing you can use.

I would like to encourage you to get some spot checks in addition to the pre-shot tests you've been getting. It's very hard to say whether your kitty really needs insulin without a bit more data. We typically look for numbers that are below 120 and prefer to see the majority of numbers below 100. Often, if a cat's pancreas is working, we see lower numbers after meals. Again, seeing more test data will let us know if this is the case.

As for shooting, it may be that Mercedes' pancreas needs a bit more support but, (sounding like a broken record here) the only way to know is, you guessed it, more tests. Many of us do shoot very low numbers. I would routinely shoot any number above 50 BUT I had a great deal of data that allowed me to know how my cat's cycles typically played out.

Actually the can food has 2.5 % of carbs. The dry literally has 0. There is nothing in it at all but meat and vitamins. I've done a lot of research on this food and have received tons of info. And as she is very picky with wet food it's hard to get her to eat. Her numbers have never been this low on wet food. Also we changed vets because he never wanted to discuss diet change or home testing. Last time we had her there everything looked great! Kidneys, liver etc. I was just curious what 'normal' levels are. I've heard so many different opinions here

Those numbers are nearly normal (40-120 mg/dL off insulin). You might make sure she is grazing or eating mini-meals which helps keep the glucose from spiking too much due to a big meal. She seems close to becoming diet-controlled.

Thank you! I've tested her a few times today. Most recent was 84. She's had a bowl of the Young Again Zero carb down all day so she is grazing. Plus I give her a couple freeze dried chicken pieces. Now with no insulin at all could she drop too low?? That's what I'm always worried about.

No insulin on board, no reason for her to drop below her normal levels.

    Hi Rebecca
I got YA as well--but I am doing Tight reg which requires wet food for a few reasons--1 is that wet food is much better for a cat just by design. Also if a cat drops too low it is much easier to get them safe with wet food-
But that being said if the cat won't eat wet food --that is not a good choice
I think the discrepancy with the 0% vs about 5% with YA is that it is 0 digestible carbs.

It sounds like your kitty is doing well on it ---if I could just suggest to keep an eye on the kidneys as dry food is not the friend of kidneys-(over time)
I have 1 who has been CRF for 6 years I can only guess is from dry food and probably genetics.
I wish YA would make a LC wet food....they do have amazing sale people but I do not like that they are not always honest. That being said you cannot argue with success!:bighug:

Given that you shot this morning, please get some early tests in (e.g., +1, +2) to make sure that Mercedes' numbers don't drop too low. You will also need to get some spot checks beyond the early tests.

One suggestion -- given what you're seeing with Mercedes numbers, you might want to consider feeding her a "snack" at around +8 or +9. Food stimulates the pancreas to produce it's own insulin. The snack may help to lower your AMPS number. Using a timed feeder may help with your schedule so you don't need to wake up in the middle of the night -- providing Mercedes figures out there's food in the feeder.

Most of us use 50 - 120 as the normal range for BG. Some cats do run a little lower but numbers in the 40s are atypical.
