    Yesterday's Vetathon

First, thanks to all of you that visited yesterday's condo with vines and prayers and support. It is all greatly appreciated. This group is what is keeping me sane. :bighug:

My first morning in ages when I could sleep until I woke up naturally (after not getting to sleep until sometime after 4:00 am) was interrupted when the phone rang at 7:57 am. It was Jessica, the student that examined Harvey last night, calling to give me an update on him. She said he ate okay and was given his insulin on time this morning. She gave me the PM+6 and AMPS readings that were taken, which make me wonder if I got a furshot last night (entirely possible), or if it's just stress. She said I'd be hearing from the IM around noon. I went back to sleep (eventually) and was awakened at 10:28 am by a call from one of our regular vets, Dr. R. She had just received the report from the Ophthalmologist and wanted to know Harvey's status. She'd seen where Dr. C had mentioned the likelihood that the inflammation in the left eye was related to whatever's going on in his nose and had recommended a rhinoscopy. I brought her up to speed on last night's UCD visit. She wants updates as available. She asked if I was okay, said I sounded like I'd been crying. I didn't want to tell her she woke me up, so I just said I hadn't really spoken to anyone yet this morning, so it was just morning voice. Love my vets! I decided sleep time was over - even when he's not here, Harvey is costing me sleep!

Yes, coming downstairs to no cats is surreal. I don't like it. I keep thinking it's time for a poke, or meds, etc. :( I am still sitting on the edge of my desk chair. Don't want to crowd the cat that isn't behind me.

The IM just called, as promised. It was a bad connection and she has a bit of an accent, so it was hard to understand everything she said, but I think I got the gist. Harvey had been sneezing and there was blood spatter on the cage walls (atta boy, Harv!). She said he seemed to otherwise be doing well - so far blood work is all good. His kidney values are unchanged from the last panel that was done July 11th. They were able to get a time slot for the CT scan (and therefore also the rhinoscopy) tomorrow morning. :woot: She said they will keep him until at least tomorrow night, and possibly Saturday morning. :( I am going over there this afternoon with more syringes and food. She also wants a printout of his spreadsheet from the past couple of weeks. She's the IM that consulted with Dr. B and wanted me to take him off insulin after our last oncology visit. She remembers the discussions. She also said that she is going to get in touch with the radiation oncology department to be prepared to make a mask of his face in case they do find something in the nose that will require radiation treatments. :nailbiting: I am glad they are being thorough and prepared for anything, but the fact that they feel they need to makes me more :nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:.

So that's all I know. I hope you will all understand if I am not doing a lot of visiting today. I want to try to immerse myself in the pantry, get stuff done and not think too much. Please know I am thinking of everyone here and sending green thoughts to all the kitties. I'll check back in later today.

Thank you for being there for us. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Maybe that pink this morning will convince the IM vet he's not quite ready to go off the juice and you'll not get that argument. Last thing you need on top of everything else. Massive truckloads of vines on their way.

The mask probably needs to be done under anesthesia and if he's under for a CT scan, it makes sense to do it all in one go rather than a second anesthesia. That's what they did for Neko when she was at CSU for SRT. Paws crossed you'll just get the mask as a souvenir.

Tons more prayers and vines from me. I kept checking for an outdated. I wouldn't even print out the ss. Either say you forgot or you ran out of ink. You don't need an argument on top of everything else. That's my two cents and I'm sticking to it. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I don't really understand all you wrote but we're sending all the vines and prayers your way. Hopefully little Harvey's SS will not be a discussion at all....something like "ooops I forgot"..he's been in the "x" range for the past 2 weeks. Not sure how you do it Tricia, I wouldn't be functioning right now. Lots of :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Sending loads of vines to you, DH, and Harvey. These vets sound very thorough and that is a good thing. For them to do the mask now while he's under is so smart and thinking ahead "in case" . Hopefully, you have enough in your pantry to keep you busy till tomorrow night. Hugs~ :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

As to the mask, she's an oncologist - she's preparing for everything, including whether or not you have walked under any ladders with Harvey in your arms. (the last may explain some of her questions-scientists get embarrassed by their superstitions).

But really - they get ready for anything and everything - it's their job. Don't sweat the AMPS - Harvey's probably stressed out a bit, just as you are. You BP is likely pre-cardiac-which only means you're stressed out, so clean the pantry, have a glass wine, remember to breathe once in a while, and know that 16:cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat: are purring, 1 hoomin prayin', and allofus sending healing vines. healing vines.jpg

Thank you all so much for the vines and hugs and support. I had myself convinced this was nothing more than an infection, but all the vets are assuming the worst, so now I am, too. I am so very grateful that we'll get the tests done tomorrow and find out, one way or the other. :nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:

Yes, it's UC Davis. I know how wonderful they are there. All four of my cats were diagnosed with cancer in 2014, and that oncology unit became my second home. They all know me there. Harvey's over in Medicine/IM now, where they don't know us as well, but I know they are great, too. Anne, if you live in Antelope, you're right near our longtime vets at Cherry Creek Veterinary Hospital. They're the very best.
"His desk chair", indeed. Still sitting on the edge.

So the IM student on Harvey's case called this evening with an update and said that Harvey ate well for them and they gave him his insulin. I asked her to test around +6 and she said they only test once a day because they watch them very closely and expect them to be high from the stress. I explained that Harvey has been in the 30s on a human meter with no hypo symptoms. She told me that there's a big difference between a human meter and a cat specific meter, and 30 on a cat meter would be non-life sustaining! I tried to tell her that at low numbers there is virtually no difference between the two, and I'd seen many cats in the 30s - and even 20s - with no symptoms. I don't think she believed me. I'm sorely tempted to take her a copy of the Roomp-Rand study and suggest she familiarize herself with it. I did tell her that I'd been doing this for five years and this was not my first FD cat. I know what I'm doing. She assured me that she believed me. She said they'd test. We'll see.

I fully expect a call around 8:00 am. That's fine. I'm going to try to go to bed and to sleep before 4 tonight.

That is one of the few stones I don't have. It's on the list. Are you making the earrings yourself or having them made?

Our hearts are broken tonight as we keep Serryn in our hearts. Praying for a swift, peaceful crossing for Vyktor. He's been our hero for so long....:(

Thank you all for your love and support. I somehow managed to set my phone on vibrate, so slept through the call this morning telling me Harvey was doing well and was on his way in for the procedure.:facepalm::facepalm: I did get a decent amount of sleep, eventually.

The IM called a little while ago to tell me he did very well and was waking up. The good news is that they found NO masses or lesions in the nose. The tissue was inflamed and there were pockets of mucus. They took samples for biopsy, just to be safe. They were concerned about the ulcers on his nose (a new one showed up Wednesday night) and called someone from Dermatology down to take samples of those for biopsy. It will take about a week to get results. :nailbiting: So still some stressful waiting.

While I am very relieved, I'm still concerned about what caused all this, including the increase in his BGs. I am also wondering how on earth his nose will heal when I don't see how we can keep him from irritating it by licking it. No doubt he will come home in a cone, too. Good thing I still have all the raised dishes I got for Cinco.

We pick him up at 9 tomorrow morning and presumably will get to talk to the IM then. I have my nods and smiles at the ready for any talk about FD.

So thanks once again for the magic of L&L Land vines, and please spare a few more for the biopsy results and his poor little nose.

Meanwhile, I am heartbroken over Vyktor's crossing and send my deepest condolences and love to Serryn during this very difficult time. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Yea for no mass or lesions. Prayers continue until you get the all clear for the rest. I'm guessing the worst would be some type of nfection that would explain increased BG. :bighug::bighug:

I am deeply relieved. I still think stress caused the 300 range. Really don't believe you should be one bit concerned about it. Look what happens to cats when they go to the vet to get blood drawn. Their BG skyrockets. And Poor Harvey suffered a great deal more than that. A stuffed and bleeding nose, hampering his breathing -very scary, then a very long ride, then z bunch of tests, and then left at the vet hospital overnight. I think he did well not to run into black.

You know there is a virus that causes nose mucous and sores/ulcers on the nose and mouth. The calici virus. My cats had it once and it was incredibly alarming looking, but they all recovered in time. I only mention this, because there are many reasons for Harvey's symptoms that are not very serious. On the whole, Harvey's done well, maybe because he has such a proactive cat momma?

Purrs, prayers and vines continue. Vines are a typo for vibes. So good to know - it was driving me crazy, "healing vines" like huh?
    :cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat::cat:,
    and my prayers,
    and some healing(lol) vines

OMG, Kathy, that totally fits Harvey's symptoms! The only thing I can not figure out is how he might have gotten it. UNLESS, one of the cats at my friends' house (where we go to play cards most Saturday nights) is a carrier, which is possible, as they all go outside. I'm going to print the article I found and show it to the IM tomorrow when I pick Harvey up. Paws crossed that this is his problem! Thank you!:bighug:
Actually, the worst would be skin cancer. That's why they took biopsies of the ulcers. :( Once a cat has one type of cancer, they are always suspicious of another popping up somewhere.

Thank you, everyone, for sharing my relief, and my continued concern, as well. You are the best people on the planet. :bighug:

Yo Deputy Harvey, So far, so good! I'm glad you checked out OK and I'm hoping that your other tests will be OK, too. See ya tomorrow. You don't have to go in the water, just relax in the lifeguard chair.

Tricia, I am so relieved that Harvey doesn't have masses or other terrible things. You know, Rusty coughs and sneezes all the time and there's nothing that the vets can find wrong with him except that he has chronic congestion.
I hope Harvey will leave his nose alone so that it can heal!
Try not to worry. It's amazing that the vet student couldn't agree to do a simple thing like a bg test!

    Hugs and scritches,

    Ella & Rusty

I'm considering printing out the Roomp-Rand study and taking it to give to the student tomorrow, if she is there. It would certainly help her in the future if she were familiar with it. Their ideas on FD are still very antiquated.

Tricia, as usual I'm late to the party! I'm so sorry Harvey has had so much trouble, and I know it must be awful to have him away from home for so long, but I'm relieved to hear that he has no masses!!! Prayers that his biopsy comes back with more good news! (((Hugs))) Hope you can get some sleep tonight.:):bighug::bighug::bighug:

A soft whew! Relieved that you can cross a couple of things off the "most worried about" list. And sending lots of vines that the other worries can soon be relieved.

You know, a friend's cat has some sort of virus (maybe calci) that causes him nasal problems. He does sneeze blood from time to time; he'll also go through bouts of nasty congestion; he has flares that require nebulizing. Last week he had a nasal flush at the clinic. His problem is compounded by some nasty stomatitis, so it's hard sometimes to figure out what's causing what.

Lots of light for good news.

Isn't Harvey vaccinated against calici virus? It would be a relief if that is what it is because it can run its course.

Many prayers and so glad he will be home tomorrow.

I doubt it. I had never heard of it before. Dr. C stopped vaccinating the cats when they were diagnosed with cancer. She said the risks were too great.

Sending vines for a boring biopsy. :bighug: Hoping it's something as "simple" as calici. Vaccination does not prevent it, but can lesson the symptoms, however pred does lower the immune system. Civie Theo started sneezing about a week after starting pred, but it went away after a week. Before I adopted my Buster (GA) and he was still at the shelter, he had a bad calicivirus and had ulcers in his throat. At one point it was so bad he was mouth breathing and the vet didn't think he'd live. But he was a tough old street cat. His calici was not actually diagnosed in the lab but rather on symptoms. He had been vaccinated before getting sick. The vaccination for calici is usually included in the usual FVRCP shot.

I'm 90% done. I have plans for that empty space there in the middle. Just haven't had time to get it done.

    Good job Tricia!!

Your pantry reminds me of my mom's pantry from when I was a kid and my grandma's....the story I always heard was that "If a stranger comes to your door hungry, you should always have food to feed them".....so their pantries were always crammed full of stuff

I always wondered who they were expecting to knock on their door....an entire platoon of Marines???

FWIW, my civvie Noah was vaccinated against calici but he also had a flare years ago. He didn't have ulcers, though - he had a low-grade fever, lethargy, and odd limping issues. If I remember correctly, calici is part of that "4-way" vaccine they give cats and I vaguely, vaguely recall that it supposedly provides immunity for life (despite vets encouraging yearly vaccination), but don't quote me on that and someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

Stomatitis/mouth ulcers are also a symptoms of calici - I think it's one of the "more common" symptoms.

    The pantry looks fabulous!!!

    More prayers for Harvey!!

Nice pantry! Just remember that empty space is not a sign of failure. It is a totally acceptable form of living! [IMG]

Make sure you give Harvey lots of scritches from his FDMB family when he comes home this morning. [IMG] Sending tons and tons of vines and prayers for you both. :bighug:

Wonderful news about no mass! Keeping good thoughts and sending vines for a boring non-eventful biopsy. I too think the calici virus vaccination is a one timer .

One of my civvies, Sparrow, had a bad case of Calici when I first rescued her from the streets. She had already been vaccinated twice, but shortly after she got spayed, she came down with it. From how I understand it, the virus is fairly common and tends to only effect cats with a weakened immune system (in Sparrow's case, the anesthesia was probably a bit much). She had ulcers all over her tongue and throat and was drooling profusely. It cleared up after a few weeks, but she had another flare-up months later.

I'm glad that the reports are good! Vines and prayers on the biopsy will be negative (and it's the calici? or something easily treatable). There is so much knowledge on this board, it's great. I'm reading this half awake but I think I'm getting the gist:oops:.

I'm glad you could get your project mostly finished, that must feel wonderful! The pantry looks great:):).

I am happy to hear your furbaby gets to come home today. Love and hugs!:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Extra vines this upcoming week for clear biopsy results.
