    Harvey's Homecoming

Apparently, Harvey enjoyed being back at the lagoon so much he spent the night there. I really wish I'd gotten another test last night . I was not prepared for that 67 this morning. Considering his condition, I decided it was best to skip his shot (for any lurkers, this is a decision specific to Harvey's situation and does not follow TR protocol. Do not copy dosing).

He's still very weak, but after he ate his breffis (and he ate most of what I gave him :)), he started heading for the big litter box, across the room. Turns out he didn't need to go, but he was determined to get there! He ate all the food I left for him last night and a little of the snack Mark gave him at 6:00 am (+10). He had a small, dry poo. I know he needs more water. I put the dish in front of him at every opportunity. They don't want me to give him fluids, due to the sodium in the Ringers, but how else do I keep him from getting dehydrated? I add water to his food and he gets a couple of mls of water with his pills. I'm really at a loss.

He doesn't seem to mind the Potassium, which I give in .5ml squirts, allowing him time to swallow in between. He gets 2.5ml three times a day. Or maybe he's just too weak to resist. :(

Trying to stay positive, but it's hard. If he doesn't show improvement in the next few days, we may have to start talking about the unthinkable. I don't know if I'll be able to handle that...

Sending healing vines to all in need and hugs to all their beans. :bighug: Extra vines and prayers to Julie & Eleanor and to Elise, her DM & Max. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Just found this on Tanya's website for CKD. Apparently, too much sodium is a common problem. At this link:
    http://www.felinecrf.org/subcutaneous_fluids_tips.htm#fluid_types

I found the work-around that they suggest. Perhaps your vet or formulation Rx could prepare it.:

ISFM consensus guidelines on the diagnosis and management of feline chronic kidney disease (2016) Sparkes AH, Caney S, Chalhoub S, Elliott J, Finch N, Gajanayake I, Langston C, Lefebvre H, White J & Quimby J Journal of Feline Medicine & Surgery 18 pp219-239 state

"although a balanced electrolyte solution such as lactated Ringer's solution is often used, a hypotonic solution (half-strength lactated Ringer's or 0.45% saline, with added potassium as needed) may be preferable to reduce the sodium load."

With my CRF cat they did not give me lactated ringers, I used the ones as linked above in @Kathy and TiTi post. This was for a very similar reason, a long ER ICU stay with lactated ringers raising his sodium level.
Big hugs, hope you can get the sodium levels squared. So encouraging he is sticking to his routines at home..SUPER BIG HUGS to you and to Harvey.

Yo Deputy Harvey, Thanks for coming to the lagoon to help out. You are a super deputy! But you've got to be sure to eat, too. I'm going to whip you up a nice pot of chicken soup with lots of vitamins and a delicious broth. We'll sit on the lifeguard stand and eat. Deputy China can come up from the lagoon to have some, too.
My mamabean is sending you some lovely vines.

I went thru something similar when Layla spent 13 days in hospital recovering from losing half her intestines to an operation meant to stop the septicemia caused by numerous dog bites. I felt incapable of caring for her properly. I was afraid she'd die because the doctor said she would not be out of the woods for at least 4 weeks. I was a chicken **** wreck.
Maybe Harvey will make it, and maybe he will not, but this is way too early to judge it.
He pooped which is super. He's eating, which is fantastic. He's making the rounds of his home and touching base, which is wonderful. His dehydration might be more manageable if you use the halved solution of Lactated ringers that I mentioned in another post. Harvey is in no way giving up. Harvey sounds happy, delighted to be home, and striving to get strong again. Harvey sounds :cat: good.

Take all our love for you and Harvey, and chin up and cheer up. Hah, like I should talk after the miserable mess I was during Layla's loooong recovery:rolleyes:. Lol. Hugs, fellow sufferer.:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I'm happy Harvey is eating for his mama bean, and checking out his digs. He sounds happy to be home! Hopefully you can try the fluids that people have mentioned to keep him hydrated. Vines for Harvey to gain strength and heal, with appy vines too. Hugs and prayers:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks for visiting us, everyone. My sister is here from Ohio, so I haven't been back online.

We went to her favorite winery for tasting and lunch, then back home. Harvey ate the food I left for him while we were gone. He got his insulin tonight, but only .75. Guess we should have stuck with 1.0. We're going to go with the .75 in the morning because I have to take my sister to the airport around +3. Mark will be here, but he'll be on conference calls, so just able to check Harvey now and then. We'll probably go back to 1.0 at PM, and I will stay home from bowling to watch him.

He's still very weak, and eating and drinking small amounts. He has a lot of spunk, though, and tries very hard to move around the house. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.:( He sounds like his nose is a little congested, so I may try a steam treatment tomorrow afternoon. Wonder if that virus that messed up his nose before is back? Hope not.

Harvey is bound to have lost some of his strength having been cooped up in a cage and not moving much for so long.
So part of his weakness could well be due to that.
It is great he is eating, pooping, checking out his home again and he certainly hasn't given up....he's a real trooper.
    Little steps, little steps.
Hugs to you and DH.....it is so hard when our fur babies are sick.

    I second this!

We humans, after just a few days being bed bound with a cold/flu, are very weak and shaky once we get on our feet....and that is just from a normal virus and a few days on our backs. I think these "signs" this early in the game, after being confined to a hospital all this time, shows tremendous hope. I cannot imagine how weak his little body is after all he has been through!

Remember that "knowing" before letting go....he seems like he is really putting in the effort...go Harvey!

I do know it is hard to watch our little ones in these weakened/ill states....it is such an emotional experience....please take care of YOU too.
