Baby went incredibly low today and in 10 years of giving insulin, this was her 1st symtomatic hypo, looking for feedback on how to handle the insulin in future as I know this makes them more sensitive.

    Thank you all,

how low is low? I know when Spot goes low, I just give him some high carb and can expect a big bounce. I shoot through the bounce. But that is Spot. I suppose you should lower Baby's dose now...by .25 units.

My Doodles has had more than 1 symptomatic hypo. It doesn't happen each time but does happen. I haven't changed anything different with dosing etc. but try to test often enough and get him up quickly.

I do see that Baby hit 35 on 10/18. Any time you get a number in the 30's it's an automatic reduction. Be vigilant about that.

Over the years I do what you do @Deb & Spot & she is a bouncer .. but she didn't bounce ... I gave Karo / gravy / anything i could get in her.
    Agreed @Doodles & Karen about reductions ...
This was so scary today, as I don't recall seeing "sniffing" as a hypo system but 1.5 months ago Baby hit 20's and her symptom was "sniffing" everything like a hound dog hunting or a drug dog searching for drugs. Sniffing EVERTHING. Today scared me tho because she walked in circles & was off balance.

Sometimes after a hypo event they can be very sensitive to the insulin. Even though you reduced the higher dose can still be in action so, I would get a +2 (looks like you usually do anyway ) to see how the cycle will go.

@Doodles & Karen really? I was shocked to sniffing 1.5 months ago .. now again .. this should definitely be on list as not a symptom I recall reading about.
Very scary! Thank you for your kindness / support.

I had one true hypo. His numbers tested low and we treated. He didn't seem to know where he was. We called his name and he headed toward us bumping into everything as if he was following the sound only. We thought the cat was blind and headed to the ER. The ER vet said something about "brain blindness" being a symptom. (Of course, by the time we got to the ER and into the office, his numbers had started to come up and he was fine.)

I "liked" that but really there should be an "unlike" button because what you went through must have been so scary!

yikes, Nicole, how scary. Good catch on the test today. Well done.

I agree that you should reduce the dose.

On 10/18 ss it says the am dose was 5u - I'm pretty sure that was a typo - can you look at it?

    Hi Nicole.

So sorry Baby gave you such a scare. My FD kitties have hit the twenties before, but never had symptoms. I would have been terrified. Nice job bringing her up.

If you can, you might want to get a +11 or +11.5 in the morning, and post for help if you're not sure about shooting. I'm assuming you'll be leaving for work not too long after shooting? We want to be sure Baby isn't going to pull any tricks while you're out.

I just appreciate all of you caring. Much love & caring always. I shot a 310 with only .5 this morning because I am BCS now. I have to say this was scarier than Baby's 1st insulin injection where we ended up (due to my ignorance in ER). To see imbalance, confusion, sniffing, walking in circles has made me a lot less confident in handling. It is just so scary to know I might have lost her & even scarier to know people do not test. Hugs, love & light my friends; your kindness & caring never once goes unnoticed.

I hope Baby is feeling better today and you're doing better, as well.

I'm having some trouble figuring out what you're basing your dose changes on. 10/4 and 10/5 you reduced the AM dose. Unless you weren't going to be home, I'm not sure why the dose was lowered. From 10/9 to 10/14, you dropped the dose from 1.5u to 1.0u and then brought the dose back up to 1.5u. Again, there may have been a reason but it's not evident from Baby's SS. On 10/18, Baby dropped into the 30s -- and that was with a 0.5u AMPS (not sure why the lowered dose). It's actually this drop into the 30s that should have been a red flag to reduce the dose to 1.25u. However, you continued to shoot the 1.5u dose.

Even with a long term diabetic, a drop below 40 indicates that the dose needs to be reduced. If you've been holding the dose for 3 drops between 40 - 50, that's fine. However, the protocol guidelines are that any drop below 40 requires a dose reduction.

thank you, I value you always. re: 10/9 to 10/14 In my comments section I write why I lowered dose (due to work .. driving 2 hours back /fort (4 hours) round trip. Regarding the rest of why you gave me feedback on .. let me go look & this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you @Sienne and Gabby (GA)

Also, another thing .. I had a fur shot too .. so wasn't sure what to do .. historically Baby bounces .. so kept with 1.5 to circumvent bounce .. then fur shot ... thank you for all feedback.

I see you shot 1.00 tonight. Are you going to try that for a few days to see how she does?
