If you shoot now, is it a good time to get back on a roughly 12 hour schedule for you?

Yes it is a good time. And i get a break from work at +4.5 if i give her a shot now to check on her

Then I would shoot. Her depot is going to be a bit messed up but you need to get some insulin in her. Are you able to get a +1 or you have to shoot and leave?

While I don't want to underdose her or leave her high, I also don't want to overdose her without being able to see what kind of numbers she's had at 1u.

You say you can test at +4.5 but when will you be home after that to monitor her? What do you think about shooting 0.75u as her new dose if you can test her a little more today?

I can only test her at +4.5 but then i can test again at +11. Then can monitor her for a while at +13. Weekends are hard for me i can get on a schedule better during the week. So should i shoot her now and how much?

Did you see my note above? Yes, I would shoot but if you can't monitor her, I might go with 0.5u again.

When you get home today, we need to find a schedule that gives her more consistency but works for you otherwise, she might end up back in the hospital again. I'm worried that 0.5u is not enough insulin but I also don't want her to hypo.

I agree! We rely on data to make dosing suggestions and in this case, we simply don't have it. Sticking with a 0.5u dose right now seems to be the best bet. Please leave plenty of food out for her to nibble on while you're gone.
Yes! Figuring out some sort of schedule will help us help you.

That's great. It will really help if we can get her on a consistent schedule. So you shot two hours late? Will you be able to shoot at +12 after that in the morning?

I have been thinking about your situation and wonder if your budget would stretch to a timed feeder? They run around $40. The one many of us here use is the Petsafe 5 Meal Feeder, available online and at some Petsmarts and Petcos. You can also get an ice pack to put under the tray to keep the food fresher over several hours. You would be able to set it to give Chloe a meal every one or two hours, and have it turn to an empty bowl two hours before shot time, which would enable you to shoot on time with no food influence.

Have you been able to download Google Sheets to your phone so you can access your Spreadsheet?

It would not be safe to shoot at +10.5. This is the kind of problem you won't have if you do get that feeder (and Chloe is cooperative and uses it). How long is your shift?

So that would make your shot 3.5 hours late? What about the next shot? Would you be able to shoot 11.5 or 12 hours after that?

It would be better to shoot 4 hours late than 1.5 hours early, especially since you won't be there to test.

Are you going to be there tonight and able to test her? If so, I would check her no later than 2 hours after the shot. You can check at +1 if you want, but that number could be inflated by food influence. Post what you get and we'll help you figure out how often/if you need further tests tonight.

OK, first thing you need to do is get some carbs into her. Either some gravy from a can of cat food in gravy or a little honey or syrup. Get her to eat that and then test again in 20-30 minutes. Personally, if she's been in the 30s for 15-20 minutes, I'd go with the honey or syrup first and follow it up with some carby food in a bit.

I would retest to confirm it's not a wonkybtest, if around the same number, get a little Karo syrup and rub on her gums and retest in about 30 minutes.....

Sorry - I didn't realize that when I first commented...just saw that on your Facebook post. If you've only got 2 test strips left, then I would carb her up. Safer to overdo the carbs than risk her dropping again with no way for you to check. Do you have honey or ice cream or high carb cat food?

Just curious what the reasoning for shooting the .75 instead of the .50 suggested by @Marje and Gracie ?

At any rate, I would say you earned a reduction tonight.

Like it or not, she needs it. If you have an oral syringe, you could try getting it into her with that so she doesn't have to lick it up. Do you have any higher carb cat food - Fancy Feast gravy lovers or similar? Without the ability to test she really needs that as well as the sugar from the honey to make sure she stays up...simple sugars don't last long in their system.

rub it on her gums... plus try getting her to eat some higher carb food ... the honey will bring her up but it wont keep her up why you need the higher carb food with it

Nothing with chocolate in it - that's not good for cats at all. But if you have vanilla, she could have a couple of teaspoons. If that's what you've got, we'll work with it. And we'll help you figure out a hypo kit so you don't have this happen again once you've got her past this low.

The DM wet probably isn't going to help. The dry food may keep her higher than you'd like for longer than you'd like, but if that's the only higher carb cat food you've got then you may have to go with it. If you can't get more strips tonight, it might be your safer option anyway.

PB doesn't show up on the toxic list for cats, but she might or might not like it. I'd guess it's worth a try. If not, you have honey and you have dry food - you have options for keeping her numbers up. She's going to be fine and you're doing a great job. :)

Where are you on the cycle now?

I'd start with maybe 8-10 treats and test again when it's been 1 hour since she's had any food/treats (since I know you're almost out of strips).....unless she starts to show signs of crisis

Ok. Now you can relax and just keep an eye on her. She should be fine for an hour or so. I'd test in 60-90 minutes unless, as Chris said, you see her behaving strangely - walking in circles, shaking, or any signs of distress. Just don't fall asleep without setting an alarm, especially if you might not wake up to the alarm. Once the effects of the treats and other stuff you've given her wear off, she could drop again.

Don't give her anything else. We don't want her to get sick.

Did she eat any of the ice cream?

I wouldn't take her regular food away if she normally has it out. Unless you're worried that she might not eat more treats if you need her to.

Only if she ate some and ate her treats. You don't want her to get full or to get sick, but you want enough in her to bring her BG up. How much do you think she ate?

Most cats will look for food when low, so you could leave it down and just watch her.

That's perfect. So set your alarm to get up in 2.5-3 hours and take the food away. Test/feed/shoot before you leave (assuming you get a number over 150 - if not, post for help). If you can stop on the way home for more strips (at least two boxes so you have a reserve), you can test when you get home around +2. That would be great!

Oh, and your new dose will be .5, assuming you get a number high enough to shoot.

    You just did. :bighug:

I'm glad it worked out okay. Fill her bowl up now and be sure to get up in 2.5-3 hours to take it away so we know her AMPS is not food influenced. You did GREAT!!!

She'll probably bounce from this, so don't be shocked if you get a super high number. That's normal after going so low so fast and giving her so many carbs.

    Hi there,
do you think you could updated the ss, I'm having a hard time following what's gone on, trying to catch up on the thread, but it's sooooooo long.
    thanks

    Questions
If you shoot now, what can you do for monitoring the cycle going forward?

I am glad everything worked out Casey and that Chloe is doing well :)

Walmart carries 20 packs for the Confirm. I ended picking up one of those (along with my regular supply) and put them in my hypo kit. That way I KNOW I have supplies if I run out of my regular ones.

Its so much at once and you're doing a great job :)

How many hours since the last shot? Did you shoot 0.75u last night, what was pmps last night? When did she last have food?

She is likely bouncing from the 38 last night, but the depot can still be in play and we can't be sure she won't drop once the insulin onsets at around +2.

If you can be 100% sure that you can be back for +3 (I'd be happier/more comfortable if it was +2), it's likely OK to shoot the reduced dose.
If she is dropping at +3, are you going to be able to stay with her?

You missed my post #7 which recommended you go with 0.5u since you can't test:
And Jill agreed with the 0.5u in post 8. I'm glad Chloe is ok. It's hard to keep up with all the info but the intent was for you to shoot 0.5u since you had a busy schedule.

It is good, she seems to be coming down, but not too fast.
However, you are round about onset of the shot now, and with that number being lower than the amps, if I had to guess I would guess that the cycle may well be active. That means that she may continue to drop as the insulin action increases (as a general rule till around +6, but bear in mind that every cat is different, and other factors can also mean that they continue to drop beyond +6m before the insulin action starts to decrease and the numbers begin to rise).

So important question are you going to be around now, or do you have to head back to school?

Did you leave her some food, Casey? Please look into getting that feeder soon so you can be sure she has food while you're gone and then no food for two hours before shot time.
