    hi there,

I am with a rescue here in Utah and have a cat Max (approx 10-12) dlh flamepoint Siamese....only has about 25% function in each kidney. He is very picky about eating and I do not believe in feeding him the prescription diets as most of the ingredients are crap however I do not know what I really should be feeding him. He’s currently getting canned organic chicken food from Costco because he won’t eat it. But I did read recently that the Pea protein or pea flour is not good for him. He recently stopped eating and I thought it was the end I took him into the vet and his glucose was 1400! He also likes Weruva packets.

Your instincts are right to avoid the perscription food. Try the weruva bff cans..... They are both low on phosphorus for his kidneys and low in carb. I feed that to my cats when I had my diabetic and ckd cat at the same time because they could both eat it. Your other option is to feed a low carb food like fancy feast classic and add a phosphorous binder to it.

    What insulin is he on?
How advanced is the ckd? Does he get sub q's?

Here's a food list. Pick foods low in phosphorus and low carb (Under 10 percent).

Diabetes can be hard on the kidneys.... We can help you get it under control. If you will be home testing him (it's the best way to keep Max safe and find the ideal dose) we can give you a shopping list. I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC.

Yay!!! Thank you so much for your reply. He does really love the weruva packets like chick magnet but They have gravy... are those safe as well.

How can I get what I need to test at home? He is on vetsulin- very advanced kd- he only has about 25% function in both kidneys. Originally when he was tested the vet told me to get him on better quality food the only thing he would eat was the Costco brand organic chicken and turkey. I think I made his kidney values worse by feeding him this? Possibly this made him diabetic?

He gets 200 mg of fluids a day in the middle of the insulin shots. I’m not sure the insulin shots are a good idea he has energy and then receives the insulin shot and seems to sleep after he eats. This morning he was running around but has not eaten I still gave him his one unit of insulin because now I am afraid to stop it abruptly....

I can go get some of the fancy feast and I do have the Epakitin & azodyl but wasn’t sure if ok to use w the diabetes...

Thank you <3 I am so happy to hear from you, it wasn’t allowing me to post hopefully this reply comes through.
    ay!!!

It could be that the some of insulin he's on is too large. The only way to know for sure is to home test. If you have a Walmart nearby stop in and pick up

    1. Relion micro or confirm meter (not Prime)
    2. Box of 100 extra test strips
    3. Box of 28 gauge lancets
    4. Cotton cosmetic rounds
    5. Neosporin ointment with pain relief

    Hi Janet,

I have a glucose meter at home a one touch ultra 2 for humans. Will this meter work? Maxes on two shots a day this morning I attempted to take his Glucose & it said 38... I am worried that Max is not diabetic but not sure why he had a glucose level going into the vet 1400. No one has told me what is normal range and what is abnormal, what requires a shot. When I took him to the vet Friday 7 1/2 hours after a shot his glucose was 124. He’s not eating that great. I gave him his shop this morning he seemed to have energy and be doing well then this evening he didn’t eat much I gave him a shot again and he’s mostly sleeping. What should his glucose be?

The test strips I have are out of date does that make a difference?

He is getting 200 ML‘s of fluids a day. I think I am not going to give him a shot tomorrow morning and see how he does. I have another job that I am also supposed to start on vetsulin but I am really nervous... she definitely has all the signs of a diabetic cat Max however does not. He is not drinking a lot, he is severely skinny I’m sure from the kidney disease I’m just so worried

Can a cat not eating for 2 days cause the glucose to be very high? I just tested it now he has recently ate but he did have a shot tonight and it was 58... I believe that is too low correct? I’m so worried I had a hard time getting blood out of his ear :/ poked him several times and finally had to poke the vein I feel like the biggest jerk

Yes you can use a human meter. 38 is way too low! Normal on a human meter is 50-120. You don't want it below 50 or they can become hypoglycemic. Which insulin is it and what is the dose?

If you want specific dosing help tomorrow, make a new post asking for help so people see it. If you test and the number is below 200 we recommend new people skip the shot. If it's just slightly above that consider reducing the dose. But again of you want help, make a post asking for help.

Listen you do what you have to do. Can you test again? 58 is approaching to be too low. How long after the shot did you get 58? Do you have Karo or honey in case you need it?

I don't know what impact expired test strips make, but to be sure get new ones tomorrow.

For some reason whenever I’ve tried to post anywhere else it tells me there’s an error and won’t allow me to make the post?

We do have a lot of spam filters maybe that's the problem. Try shortening the new post.
