Food Issue - Limited Ingredients?

Tinker was diagnosed recently and the new food just arrived (Purina DM wet food - I ordered it before getting on this site). Tinker had been on Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein (HP) dry food because he has a sensitive tummy. Needless to say he vomited up every scrap of the new food. He is also on budesonide (0.25 ml liquid per day) because he has something like IBD (tends to get diarrhea)

Any ideas on a limited ingredient diet which is diabetes friendly?

The cat food database can help you. You can put in the criteria you want such as maximum carbs, and it will give you a list of foods that meet the criteria. I saw a couple of Natural Balance limited ingredient foods on the list. I do not have personal experience with these types of food, so maybe others who do can give you specific recommendations.

 

I used Nature's Variety Instinct L.I. grain-free for my girl with IBD. I also used their raw frozen food (all my guys LOVE it!). What finally helped her the most, though, was s.boulardii and Slippery Elm Bark.

 

I had to do a lot of research on limited ingredient foods for my cat. They're always coming up with new ones now so some may not be listed yet on the cat food database. The new Canidae duck pate LI is not on there yet but the sliced duck is. Nature's Variety Instinct LI single protein may be one to look at. Unfortunately it's trial and error to see which ones they like, and which ones their digestive system tolerates.

 

Cat food database - awesome! However: I have honestly looked all over the site but I am getting overwhelmed -- what is considered "low" carbs? What numbers should I put in the boxes?

I go with 5% on the carbs, personally.

I am not sure where you are located but Jones has IBD and he has a super sensitive stomach. I have been using the Rawz diet. It is low carb (1-2%), no gums and is one protein source (turkey, chicken, beef or salmon). He has done super well on the chicken and turkey and the occasional salmon.

We have also used the Tiki Mousse Chicken and Chicken and Egg and the occasional salmon. And Weruva Fowl Ball - He has done well with these as well.

 

Question - why are the percentages in the Cat Food Database so far off from the percentages on the manufacturer's description?

In the Pet Food Labels section, it says, "Unfortunately, pet food labels (“Guaranteed Analysis”) give us very little usable information regarding composition since they do not list the carbohydrate percentage and they only list the protein and fat and water in terms of minimums and maximums which are, by definition, inaccurate."

 

The cat food database is based on "As Fed Values" - which is what they are actually getting over time vs. the guaranteed analysis - the mins - max information.
