Hi. New here. I've had cats with kidney disease (currently have one), but never had a cat with diabetes. This is a first! Hope to find valuable information about monitoring her glucose level. I'm currently giving her 1/2 a unit of insulin morning and night. I have not been monitoring her glucose level for about a month now. She was going to the vet for that but I purchased a monitor and have to do that myself. Nervous and confused!

Welcome to you and your kitty!

To get you started with home testing here are some helpful links:

Testing and injecting tips (really good diagram here of the testing 'sweet spot' on a kitty's ear)

Home Testing Links and Tips (helpful 'how to' videos here)

We also have a very helpful spreadsheet you can use to record your kitty's BG results and monitor her response to insulin treatment. It will also help members here to make better suggestions when you need help. Here are the links you'll need:

    FDMB spreadsheet setup instructions

    Understanding the spreadsheet grid

If you'd like some assistance with spreadsheet setup just give a shout and we'll find someone to help you.

It's also a wise precaution to check your kitty's urine for ketones (with Ketostix or similar). Here are some more helpful links for you:

    Testing your cat for ketones

    Tips for collecting urine samples

There's a bit of a vertical learning curve at first but we'll do all we can to help you both. Just pop over to Feline Health with any questions you have. :)

Welcome to the two of you! What is your kitties name? Congrats on getting a meter, it is definately scarey in the beginning, but with the wonderful folks here you'll get the hang of it in no time!
