    Hi. My cat was recently diagnosed with diabetes. I live in Malaysia and the vet says it is difficult to get hold of insulin for cats. My cat is on dry food for diabetic cats (Royal Canine) but has diarrhea all the time. Poor kitty looks tired. Can someone advice me please.

    Welcome. Diabetic dry food is higher in carb them pate wet food. I would switch. Was he eating wet or dry before being diagnosed?

    What are some brands available to you? You want a low carb wet food.... No gravy. Most likely the insulin your vet will get for you is canisilun.

    Thanks Janet. The vet has not given her insulin as it is not available here apparently. I will need to explore options on how to go about getting the insulin.

    Hydration: Wet vs Dry Food

    Do cats have a poor thirst drive or are they simply being fed the wrong food?

    Some experts believe that all dry foods have to contain more than 10% starch in order to form a kibble, Young Again has been proving them wrong for almost 15 years. These same experts also believe that feeding a dry food causes a cat to remain in a minor state of dehydration when compared to feeding a wet food. This is also not true with Young Again ZERO Cat Foods. It turns out that dehydration in cats has little to do with whether a food is dry or wet and has everything to do with the starch content of the diet. The higher the starch content of a diet, the lower the urine volume will be. (Hydration) Our ZERO cat foods contain only a trace amount of starch our diet behaves like a meat only wet food. Urine and blood panel testing will easily confirm perfect hydration in cats consuming any of our foods.

    oung Again ZERO and ZERO Mature Health are the ONLY dry feline diets that contain less than 1% starch. Our special process allows us to make a dry kibble without a traditional starch source, which up until now, was not possible. Our diet contains absolutely NO grains, NO plant proteins, NO gluten, NO vegetables.

    Young Again Dry Has Zero Carbs .

    That's fine. I feed young again myself, but it is not available In Malaysia where this poster is from. The perscription dry food is too high in carb.

    Dear cat friend,

    I would like to know what were the levels of blood glucose for your cat. My vets (I wanted a second and a third opinion) are reluctant to give insulin to my Sophie and her levels are around 230-240. Initially, her BG was over 320 and I changed her diet to wet food for diabetic cats (mainly Royal Canin and Hill's). Nevertheless the best results were obtained after I began to give her raw liver and raw meat (chicken, turkey and veal).The vets could not give me a reasonable explanation. But it still works.
    I live in Romania, so the food available in the States are not available for my cat.

    @Susheela Nair -

    Hello and welcome to you and your kitty.

    I've attached a document below which contains information about treating diabetic cats with insulin glargine (also known as 'Lantus' insulin). It is co-authored by Dr Jacqui Rand of the University of Queensland, Australia (she's a major authority on feline diabetes). It may be a helpful guide for you and your vet to review and discuss.
