Baloo and his journey

Hello all,

I've never in my life thought that i would write on a forum page about my life events.

Baloo is a now a 9yrs old black cat. When he was just 7years old, i brought him to the vet because he was drinking soooo much water, his fur was fullll of dandruff and he was starting to walk weird on his back paws. I ignored the signs for months assuming i was seeing things. Sure enough, the vet saw him and knew right away. She tested his glucose and he was at 28, VERY high and she told me that he had 2 weeks tops to live if i didn't act right away.

Went home, my boyfriend and i cried like babies and, because of his young age, came to the conclusion that we will NOT give up and will start the insulin injections. He has dental disease also but to start, we focused on saving his life from immediate danger.

2 months later, he was back to his usual spunk and he is playing with his toys and thriving.
its now been 2 years and he's GREAT

**TO PEOPLE GOING THROUGH A DIAGNOSIS LIKE THIS DON'T GIVE UP AND FIGHT IT, it's easy (takes commitment for sure) but the reward is priceless.**


Now... His teeth are really bothering him. We are going tomorrow to have them all removed. I'm back to my fear of losing my baby. There are risks to put a diabetic cat under anaesthesia.

Ready? I'm going to send you some of our cat magic. Noah's brother Nigel had some teeth pulled and we were put on freak-alert by our vet but a good vet can do magic. We have those teeth in a tiny jar to remember that day. Noah himself needs all his teeth pulled but has an enlarged heart so he will be on pain meds the rest of his life. And then there's me! I have something called trigeminal neuralgia which means if the wind blows the wrong way or someone vibrates your head it's more painful than having your tibia broken but I had mine done all at once (I'm older than you) and lived.
So now you know Baloo will come home with you too.

Welcome! He has to have ALL of his teeth removed? Resorption or something else? Both of my cats have had extractions. Willow had several years ago then several more this past year. All were due to resorption. Mia, my diabetic, had a few removed back in November for the same reason.

Anesthesia is a risk for anyone, human or animal, diabetic or not. If there is blood work done to make sure he is healthy (other than the diabetes), and as long as proper monitoring is done during the anesthesia, that should reduce the risk. I hope it goes well!

 

It's dental disease,not sure exactly, i'll ask more questions tomorrow.

Sorry, late to this thread. You have been great parents to Baloo. I am really happy to hear he made it thru the dental surgery.

Little Dude had teeth removed when we first adopted him as a feral. Then he had some resorption and had more teeth removed about 12 months later. Here is a pic from our loverboy Leo (diabetic) and Little Dude (orange) to cheer you up. As I have told others:
- Orange colored pillows are the best in the world !

 

Anyone knows how long it takes for the swelling to go down?

 

It depends on how much surgery was required. Little Dude was happier a few days later. During his first surgery he was still partly feral and he was really unhappy. That tooth removal included 2 surgical removals of broken top canines (the pointy ones)....poor Dude! He was healed in about 2 weeks.

The second surgery was extractions, and he was mostly healed in 1 week.
