I adopted my second diabetic cat Big John on 2/16. He is on N, 6U, twice a day and DM wet and dry. I have no history except for today and no vet records yet. He was not home tested so started that yesterday. He tested 146 pmps so I gave no insulin last evening. This amps, he was 255, close to threshold for N. After waiting for some help here, tried 3U. By +2 he was down to 131, +2.5 down to 56. I should mention I have no previous experience with N, only Lantus and PZI.

My other cat is already on Lantus so I am familiar with it. Since we are starting from scratch with Big John, I would like to try Lantus with Big John and it seems like the best time to switch rather than getting him regulated on N etc. I have a vet apt for him the second week of March. My past experience with this FDMB is that there is more experience here than most vets have so I am comfortable working with all of you!

Tomorrow, we have plans to be away most of the day. I would like to try the Lantus tomorrow morning. Can you give me some guidance/dose suggestions to start? When I switched Andy from PZI to Lantus, my vet suggested starting at 2U. I have some threads in the N forum and also the Main forum for more info. I can't remember how to link them. Thanks for any help and all suggestions are welcome!

PS I also want to switch to low carb wet.

Hi Big John, Andy and Yvonne!

I am not sure on the dosing, but I can respond and bump up your condo.

UPDATE - he tested at 272 pmps - but he is not eating - he is a grazer/nibbler and previous owner said he ate when he was hungry.

Kris - I just posted about maybe 1U Lantus tonight - what do you think? He still did not eat his evening meal - everything is so new to him.

And I can watch him tonight since 6 hrs from now I am still up!

You could try 1 u of Lantus but it'll take a few cycles for the depot to build so you might not get much bang for the buck right away. This is a strange situation going from a 6 u N dose to 3 u this AM that got him down to low dark green. You don't know if he has any history of ketones. My gut says you could probably give 2 u of Lantus tonight. That's a lot lower than what he's been getting and only 2/3 of what he got this AM. Your call I think.

Kris - I think I will average it and go with 1.5u. Especially since I can't watch him most of tomorrow. Wish us luck and thx!

Just a housekeeping note--You can "stack" the +2 and +2.5 in the same cell

What I'd do is put 131@ +2 ....then hit the space bar and put 56@+2.5

If you do that, you'll have to manually color code the cell....If you have two different colors (like blue and green), choose the one that's more important (in this case, green!)

If you want to see an example, look at China's spreadsheet for 12/20/17 (PM cycle at +5/+5.5)
