    Hi folks

Looking for some info on blood glucose meters as I can't afford to run the AlphaTrak - failing through not getting enough blood out of Bob (or he goes into fight mode!) and I'm wasting strips (again). I'm winging his insulin dosage today because he has become ultra defensive after testing yesterday.

I've looked for the Freestyle one that I've seen mentioned, but can't get it here. France tends to only supply French manufactured machines.

Is anyone using a suitable human meter available in Europe that they can recommend? (I can get stuff via Amazon UK).

    Merci.

    Hi Sylvie

Yes I have an Ebay account - thank you for the info and link on the Freestyle lite strips. You are a star! I was wondering if any other strips would work in the AT and this sounds like the perfect solution.

If you want a cheap meter with cheap strips I along with many others used the Relion Micro or Confirm from Walmart. I bought test strips on eBay most of the time. You might want to have one as a back-up. I had the Micro and it uses a small drop of blood.

Unfortunately we don't have Walmart here in France. I have now bought the alternative Freestyle strips on Ebay that work with the AT pet meter.

Thanks for the links, much appreciated. I've bought Freestyle strips that work with the AT (recommended by Sylvie) but am looking to buy a Freestyle meter as a backup, as I can get one from Ebay. French protectionism prevents me from buying a lot of things directly here and I have to rely on family sending orders on from the UK.

You don’t have to buy one. Meters are free.

It might help to massage & warm the ears before poking... I use a child’s sock knotted; with plain white rice inside. Heat it in the microwave for 18 seconds or so. Test it in your wrist to make sure it’s not too hot & adjust heating time. Warm the ear. Eventually they say more capillaries will grow & it will be easier to get the ear to bleed. I still use massage & heat on Baby’s left ear as it doesn’t want to cooperate. You may already be doing this.

That's the other problem I have with Bob - doesn't let me touch his ears. I have to test on his pads, which can also end up in a fight. His feral side is still there even after 14 years of living with us.

Are the numbers the same though? I'll have to look into this.

They'll be similar. This is a much debated topic on FDMB. The advice is to do several same blood drop tests comparing AT and Freestyle Lite strips every time you open a new vial of FSL strips.

Relion is what I use! Love it and very little blood needed.

Do the FSL strips have a coding on them? Can you check them using the control solution that comes with the AT meter?

Sorry for the questions. I know a lot about human diabetes but I'm new to FD!

There is no coding on the strips. I have never used a control solution except testing on myself or my civvie.
