Hello everyone!! I need some advice about the problem I'm having with my 10 year old male. I'm somewhat new here so I'm not sure where to ask for help but here. I have been treating my 10 year old male cat with lantus insulin for a little over a month now. At first the vet said to start him at 1 unit twice a day. His numbers were still high so she had me up him to 2 units twice a day. When I first started him on the lantus everything seemed to be fine at the 1 unit twice a day. Since I used him to 2 units twice a day he started scratching an licking his neck like crazy so much so he is putting sores on his neck an scratching him self bold. I also changed his food to the diabetic food that the vet said to start him on. I know it's not the food because he was eating the food a month before he stared the lantus insulin. The only other thing that is different is that he is now also eating Fancy feast canned food. I'm wondering if he is having a reaction to the insulin?? Is anyone else having this issue or have heard of this happening with the lantus insulin. Like I said it didn't seem to happen until I used him to 2 units twice a day. I'm not sure if I should lower him back down or take him off of the insulin until his neck heals. I'm not sure why this is happening. Does anyone know what I can buy for his neck to heal?? I have been putting Neosporin on it to try an help him but I'm not having much luck. His numbers are still kind of high too he is sill in the high 200 so I'm guessing the vet will raise him again and I'm worried on what I should do. Also I see red lines in his eyes. I know this is because of diabetes from what I have read but I don't always see these red lines in his eyes. Is this something I should also be worried about?? Will this go away once his numbers get lower?? If anyone could give me some advice that would be great. I just want to do right by my little guy. I have read so much online about diabetes that my eyes hurt lol. We both are new to this whole thing and I'm driving my self crazy trying to find out everything I need to know an what I should be doing. I just recently lost one of my cats a month ago to hyperthyroidism he was only 14 and I found out my 10 year old has diabetes at the same time. My heart is already broken from losing one of my cats I don't want to lose this one too. I'm trying to do all the right things but I think I over loaded myself with information if that's possible. Any advice anyone can give would be great. I'm so confused at this point. I don't know if I should take him off the insulin an wait till his neck heals or if I should lower his dose. Or if there is something I can do about his neck. I know he needs the lantus insulin for his diabetes an the vet claims this is the best one for him. I'm so glad I found this site!! It's nice to know I'm not alone an that there is some where to turn for information an help. I look forward to hearing from as many people as I can. I'm very worried about him an just want to do what's right. Thanks again. Hope to hear from someone soon.

There is a big learning curve and you are not the first to be confused by all the info! I’ve not heard of that reaction to Lantus, but I suppose it could be the insulin. You will get more attention on your questions though if you post them in the Main Health or the Lantus Forums.

I agree with Sharon's advice to post on the main health forum or in the Lantus forum. Lantus has an acid base and can sting although most cats aren't bothered by it. I suppose your kitty could be the exception. The Lantus forum people might be able to help.
