Hi all! I am extremely new to this and don’t even know where to begin. Late last week I noticed my 9 year old cat Bella wasn’t really eating and was not herself. I am leaving on Friday for a month for a work trip and have been really sad about it so thought she picked up on that. By Saturday afternoon she was even worse and I knew something wasn’t right. I ran her to an emergency vet where they checked her physically but told me she was perfect and that she just didn’t feel well. Gave her fluids and sent her home. Sunday she was even worse and I rushed her back and asked them to do more tests. They did and apparently she was diabetic and in DKA!! I had gone to the vet 5 months ago for her check up and everything came out good!

I have already spent thousands of dollars I don’t have and am freaking out. She is my baby but I don’t know what to do. This all seems overwhelming. I am in my 20s and I travel a ton for work. Not to mention in a matter of days I am supposed to leave for a month for work. I have tried to get out of it but I just don’t think it’s possible right now. What can I do with her while I am gone?? She is completely newly diagnosed and I won’t have any time to regulate her insulin or anything. I am calling my vet to see if they can take her while I am gone. But I feel like that will be so stressful for her and also another couple thousand for me.

Not sure if I am asking for help or what but this all just seems too much right now and I don’t know what to do!

Welcome, I’m so sorry you are going through this! DKA is a very serious condition, I’m glad you caught it in time. As for traveling, do you have a friend that would be interested in learning about diabetes and could keep her for you? They would have to be able to test Bella’s glucose, easy to learn, give her a shot and test her for ketones, also easy to do. We would be glad to help you and any caregiver learn the ropes. Hopefully others will chime in with more ideas to help.

Poor you! I like Sharon's idea of finding a cat lover friend who would be willing to take her in for the month. We can teach you (and that person) the basics of testing blood glucose at home and assessing insulin doses over the next few days. OR - could you perhaps ask your vet if they know of another client with a diabetic cat who might take on this pet sitter role in their home? You'd pay them of course but it wouldn't likely cost the same as a vet stay.

Yes a cat sitter or temporary foster would be good. Where are you located?

So..she actually didn’t make it through DKA and passed this morning. I am at a loss for words and heartbroken but thanks for the responses.
