Hello everyone, my old boy (16 at the end of the month) was diagnosed with diabetes. We put him on a very low carb diet, canned food under 6 carbs for two weeks and his blood sugar went from 29 to 22... so still very high. My vet started him on Caninsalin (I’m in Canada) at a very low dose, 1 unit and it made him very, very unwell! We also tried Cerenia hoping it would make his tummy feel a little better so maybe he would eat more. This morning both the insulin and cerenia has worn off and he felt much better and was eating again. We just can’t keep weight on him. We are going to try and appetite stimulant tomorrow but I’m concerned about how high his blood sugar is. Anyone have a similar experience and can offer advice? My vet suspects pancreatic cancer. Any advice or comments would be so appreciated. Thanks so much!

Hi Tracy - Welcome to the forum. We generally welcome people in this subforum, then request they post the more detailed questions into the Main Health subforum.

In general diabetic cats lose weight, then they get diagnosed. The keys to weight gain and a healthy diabetic kitteh are:
    - regulated blood sugar thru proper insulin doses
    - low carb food like you are providing
    - BG home testing to ensure the insulin dosage is proper and is achieving the regulation

Same happened to my Leo about 2.5 years ago. I regulated him, and he regained back all the weight and more.

Oh thanks so much for replying! Jumoke was so unwell with the two doses of caninsulin that my vet said to stop. Did you have similar experience? Did you try another insulin? I had to force feed him as he had no interest in food and could hardly walk. Then this morning everything worse off so my vet guggested we give him the Cerenea to maybe help his tummy and that made him feel horrible also. I’m concerned as if his body reacts negatively for 1 unit in Caninsulin and the low carb food, Perina DM, Weruva (Mack jack, Polynesian BBQ and Mack Jack) and some fancy feast classics. He loves gravy canned foods but they are all high carbs. He was vommitting lots before but hadn’t vomited on the canned foods. We are planning to start an API title stimulant tomorrow. It upsets him when I have t9 force feed him.

Did you have to try another insulin?

Typically we request new members to post these items in the Main subforum (here). Otherwise the welcome forum ends up being the main forum!

In general, insulin will not cause stomach upset. Note that Cerenia is commonly discussed, and you can search on the Main forum as well. Sorry to hear your kitteh is not doing well.

I would try a human insulin like Lantus or Levemir. IN Canada you do not need a prescription.
Maybe your cat is allergic to the porcine (pork) insulin from which Caninsulin/Vetsulin is made.

I don't have much experience with vetsulin I suggest you post your question in the main health forum where there are more people that use vetsulin and may be able to help you
