A better preshot today, hopefully she's done bouncing and that drop last night from pink to blue in 2 hours won't set her off again!

In the TMI category, Asia's been scooting a bit again for the past couple of days. This has been an ongoing but infrequent thing for her long before diabetes. It will either work itself out in a couple days or continue to bother her, it was always her anal glands before and the vet would have to express them (very gross). No scooting today so far, so paws crossed!

 

Hopefully she doesn't bounce *fingers crossed*

They say it's because it's itchy which could be from worms, anal glands impacted, or food sensitivity/allergies. Dogs seem to do it a lot and Asia is the first and only cat I've had to do it and vet figured out it was her glands. It was a vet that came to my house and that was one of the grossest procedures I've witnessed and I don't gross out easily!

 

My Sug, GA, used to get anal glad infections and her glands would erupts, YUCK! And stink......... Ricky, my Chihuahua gets them too , so now we have his anal glands expressed a few times a year to prevent it. Maybe you could make an appointment with one of the vet techs at your vet to have them check and express them.

She is looking good and I hope that the fast drop doesn't make her bounce again.

 

Erupt?! I'm so thankful that hasn't happened! Vet said it was because stools weren't hard enough to express them. I'm hoping I've just given too much pumpkin and a day or two off will harden things up a bit? Such a weird balance when supposedly she can be constipated, yet poops every day anyway! If I have to take her in for it, I'm just going to have them show me how to do it at home...nobody wants that though!

 

I tried to learn how to do it and I don't know if I was doing it correctly as nothing expressed out, but then it could be nothing was in the glands.........maybe you will be more successful.

 

I hope Asia surfs for you and doesn't bounce. I'd be careful if the scooting is her anal glands. When they burst it is not fun and the cat has to get an AB.

 

One of my cats scoots after using the litter box just to clean herself off. It's so gross. We need a TP product for fastidious cats.

 

Well, I've rules out worms (as far as I can tell) and his glands are fine, so maybe its allergies? Itd be the only symptom he has.

I still stand by that mine does it because he wants too. He knows he isn't suppose to do it; looks guilty when he has been caught. Never punished him in any way for it, other then some stern talking.

 

Oh the scoots...hope it’s minor re her anal glands and resolves soon. sometimes seems to be a toss-up between which is worse...the scoots or the squits

I was going to say the same thing Carla did - I wouldn't delay a vetty visit with a scooting kitty. My civvie Zen had his anal glands rupture from an abscess - I didn't know it was there until it happened. It left a HUGE gaping wound right by his butt. Very painful, AB's, bupe, nightly butt washes with betadine, and he was supposed to have a cone for a week but he so completely freaked out that I opted to pretty much stay chained to him 24/7 until he healed than use the cone. He had a second abscess that we did manage to catch before it ruptured, so it wasn't quite as traumatic.

Trix also had some pretty severely backed up glands that were starting to get infected, too.

Whenever I see scooting, I head off to the vet right away. It may work out on it's own, but if it doesn't, it can be big trouble, so I don't wait. (I've never actually witnessed the expressing, and I am more than happy to keep it that way.)

 

That's the word I meant when I said erupt. Yes, big a$$ hole next to the real one. It looked like Sug got shot in the buttocks ( can you hear Forrest Gump?)

 

Yep, it was a horrible experience, that's for sure!

 

Yikes! Poor Zen! This seems to be a little more common than my vet let on. She said it was quite rare for cats, thought I was just lucky!

I’m keeping my eye on her, no scooting so far today. When it has been her anal glands, she’s been obsessive about it, like scooting constantly like it’s really bothering her. I’ve had the vet over for non obsessive scooting, thinking it was time to express them again...and they were empty. This is just after using the LB scooting, so I’m hoping she’s either trying to be more clean or whatever it is when she does that and it’s not anal glands.

It’s not the visuals of the expressing that is the gross part (although it is not pretty)...it’s the smell!

 

We've dragged them to the vet for uneventful scooting, too, but it's one of those things that quickly gets my attention now...definitely never want to see a rupture like that again. 3 out of the 7 kitties we've had over the years have needed glands expressed - Zen was the worst, Trixie was close behind (not as infected as Zen's, but the vet said it was like expressing a dog!), and Mr Kitty was a long time ago so I don't remember his situation as well, but he didn't have an infection. I think it is probably a somewhat common issue. Plus, when they scoot, even if they aren't currently infected, the scooting itself can cause an infection. Even our vet said having anal glands sucks !

 

Oh my! That sounds thoroughly unpleasant! Poor Lt. Dan, er I mean Sug.

I’m at the ready if she seems bothered today. Funny thing is raw food poops are hard-ish, dry and crumbly. I thought something was wrong with her when I first switched to raw food, but that’s just how they are (and they don’t really smell much either). I really think the pumpkin just made them softer than usual (although still formed, nothing close to loose stools).

Thanks all! This condo gave me a chuckle today, even though poop is no laughing matter!

 

I remember my vet saying some cats get a surgery if they have recurrent issues/infections to remove them. This has happened to Asia a handful of times in the past 10 years, 2 led to getting them expressed, touch wood no infections.

Well, apparently it is quite possible to "scare the sh*t out" of them as well. I had a Great Dane long ago (whom Pig use to bully around and totally controlled him ) and when he was a puppy we were outside playing one day. Moto was over by the fence and focused on something very hard. I decided to be cute and sneak up on him and tweak his cute little puppy butt. Only, when I did I made some random noise and ended up scaring the poor pups half to death, upon which he ejected the full contents of his glands down the front of my pants.. Oh god, the smell. It was horrid.

That is horrible, yet very funny in retrospect! I didn’t know that expression could be literal. Guess you don’t do that anymore?

I don’t know what the smell is, but it’s waaaaaay worse than the worst poop smell, I’ll never forget it!

I have heard of cats pooping when being brushed on their hind quarters.

 

Aren't animals hilarious! Then there are horses who have been known to spook themselves when they fart loudly ....

 

Nice little cycle for Asia! Ruptured anal glands are definitely no fun, my long haired Calico (GA now), had a ruptured and abcessed anal gland, I had no idea, but my drooler knew something was off...he kept following her around and smelling her , when I felt her back end and saw the blood and puss mess, I rushed her to emergency vet, I had no idea what was going on, I couldn't see the abscess until after she was shaved.

 

I am in hysterics over here laughing so hard that my SIL and mom thinks I have lost it! Oh yes, the smell is gross with a capital G. Sug use to "slime" my arm sometimes as I was holding her.

 

My civvie girl will do that sometimes, yuck!

 

I had horses that did that, I have also had dogs and now a cat who does it!

I dunno. It's gross.

Ty goes poop at least twice a day if not more these weeks. He ever starts scooting, I'm defo going to puke.

 

Yes, I've had and have cats with such problems. Messy, but what can ya' do?
