I posted the other day that my guy has been bouncing a lot, so someone suggested I lower his dose until he's stable and then slowly increase. This morning he's testing at 158 for amps. Should I give a smaller dose? A few weeks ago he has pancreatitis and some ketones in his urine from my skipping a ton of shots (he wasn't eating), but now I know what to do in that case. He's eating now just fine, so that's okay.

Can you monitor today? You already fed him?

In case you haven’t left yet, I’d want to give something. Maybe 0.5? It’s low and may not be enough but a little insulin would be good with the history of ketones. If you left already with no shot, don’t worry about it! Post more in a min...walking into work :)

Yes I fed him. No I can't monitor him today. That is partly why I was worried.

I've left and dropping off my child but my Mother said she can stop by and do it. She's over dropping off my nephew's for school. :)

It would make me feel better to do something though!

Awesome! I think based on history I’d give 0.5. Shouldn’t be too much but will just get a bit into him. Again will post more separately but want to get this off!

Yes, try 0.5 u in light of the ketones recently. If I recall I was the one who suggested lowering the dose. I'm glad I did. :)

Okay longer post/explanation time! You can read this when you have time ;)

Generally I wouldn’t suggest insulin this AM due to the lower number. With Travis having had ketones in the past, avoiding insulin can be bad though. Kitties with ketones need insulin and often have to be more aggressive to avoid further ketones. Since he ate well, it’s unlikely he’d get them but you just never know!

So what I did was checked your SS and noted you’d given higher doses before on low numbers. Without mid cycle data on those days it was hard to tell what happened but the preshots after were high. He either bounced or didn’t go low. My guess is bounced since we know he does that. So I took that info and figured a little bit is better than nothing for a ketone prone kitty and 0.5 is a very small amount. It also drops your dose by 1 unit...a lot for a cat. Since you can’t monitor I wanted you to give something but not a lot. Make sense? It’s early so I might be rambling.

In the future if you can, stall with no food when you get that low number! Wait 15 min and retest. Hopefully he'll rise up enough but if not you'll know he’s rising and how much and that will help determine a dose too.

Long post but I wanted to explain my thinking so I don’t just sound like I’m pulling numbers from a hat! Let us know if you have any questions. :)

Excellent, thank you for the response. Here is my original post where I got very helpful advice to post if I had numbers under 200....

I also just put a long blurb on Travis' history in that post. I'm currently really trying to get him to stop bouncing! When you look at the spreadsheet, the early numbers are me fumbling around too much; trying to balance vet advice with the things I have started reading on here. My poor cat. :( I think I'm on the right track now though.
