Possible UTI just as I'm leaving town....

I think Spot knows somehow that I was planning on going out of town for the weekend because of course he picks now to throw a possible UTI into the mix!

He got a leukocyte (WBC) reading at the highest level on the dipstick urine test I did at home, so I took a urine sample into the vet this morning for a full workup. I doubt that I will get any results or meds before I leave for the weekend tomorrow. Any advice on home remedies to get us through until we hear back from the vet? I ordered some VetriScience UT Strength cat chews, which have D-Mannose, cranberry extract, probiotics and some other stuff that will hopefully arrive tomorrow... is that the best I can do in the meantime?

He has been obviously uncomfortable the past few days - BG readings creeping higher, and acting hungry but not wanting to eat, but so far no ketones. My daughter is well versed in testing, shooting, and keeping an eye out for issues, and she'll be with him all weekend, but of course I worry...

For cats the leukocyte pad of urine dipsticks gives 99+% false positive (based on my vet tech school and vet work). Thus, unless Spot is showing symptoms of UTI I would not be concerned with UTI

Unfortunately, he is showing symptoms.. that's why I checked :( BG readings creeping higher, acting hungry but not wanting to eat, licking/chewing on everything plastic that he can get his mouth around, licking his bottom area constantly, and for a cat that never urinates where he's not supposed to, he peed on the floor right outside the litter box....

Edit: and I almost forgot about the vomiting this morning before breakfast....

I would be concerned too specially if he's vomiting, in the mean time give him extra water, maybe a little bit during the day with a syringe to make sure he really is getting extra, and you could give him D-mannose two or three times a day (I dissolve it in 1 1/2 - 2 ml of water and syringe it that way I get both things covered )

Urine test results came back negative, so we're going to wait and see. He seems to at least be eating today, so that's better than the last few days. Hopefully whatever it is will pass.....

They can have bladder inflammation without a bacterial infection - ie., sterile cystitis. It looks exactly like a UTI. Look up feline urinary syndrome or idiopathic cystitis. One thing that helps is to add quite a bit of warm water to all wet food meals to make a sort of "stew".

That's a good thing at least you know there's not an infection, but he feels pretty much like having one, lots of water can help him in this cases at least that's what I used to do when Babu had this idiopathic cystitis (haven't have one in a while now)

He seems to like the warm water slurry.. he's currently lapping it up! I'll make sure my daughter knows that extra water is important this weekend. He does seem to be in better spirits today, so I'm not "as" worried as I was this morning...
