See current thread on Prozinc for backstory today and any possible questions that might be answered there.

How long does it take Cerenia to work? I gave it to Gracie around 4ish. And she still seems lethargic. I see no improvement.

    UGH. I want instant results.

    Dosage given: 8mg.

    About an hour or so.
Cerenia is for vomiting and nausea. It is not anti-lethargic

My apologies for butting in this thread with the question as well.

Our vet prescribed just 4 mg and once you crush it (because it falls apart completely when you try to cut such a small pill into quarters) you lose some of that tiny amount.

So how long might it take for 4mg to start to work?
I gave it to my Jester nearly 2 hours ago. He's showing a small amount of interest in food (he ate less than the equivalent of 1 can of food yesterday and today probably not even a quarter of a can so far), but no actual eating so far.

He's also on an antibiotic for an intestinal infection.

    4mg seems lowish to me?
Maybe @Djamila @Kris & Teasel @Becky & Baby Girl Kitty might have better insight?
My vet gave me 16mg tabs and I was told to cut in 1/2 so Gracie is/was getting 8mg. I didn't seem to work, but I dunno. Maybe it did, and Gracie still didn't feel like eating. It's hard when they can't talk huh?

Maybe you need an appetite upper? I just got mirtazapine. It took a lot of fighting to get it prior to an appointment, but with persistence she gave in. I literally had to show up at the office unannounced, call and email.

I'm sorry Jester isn't feeling very good. Gracie isn't eating either.

@shelaghc, how did they know he had an intestinal ingestion? Did that show up in labs? Not something I would expect to see on a lab report.
I'm just curious, as I'm wondering if vet assumed/guessed and prescribe antibiotic.

He sent a big load of blood out for testing, then consulted with the specialist at the testing place.

I just posted the numbers from the labs on Jester's SS.

Sorry, I'm not an expert in dosing Cerenia.

Rufus weighs 21.5 pounds and gets 15/16mg of Cerenia. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Usually kicks in in about 30 mins when it works :)

Yup! I think they say about half weight, rounded up. I heard you can dose up to weight in mg if it's bad vomiting/nausea.

Baby has an 8 mg tablet, she (vet) told me to give 1/2. I give it to Baby if she has pancreatitis or has vomited. The vet did say I could give the whole tablet if need be. Baby weighs 9 lbs.
Mirtz is what stimulates the appetite. I gave 1/8 of it because 1/4 made her meow for 8 hrs straight.
I guess you know the cerenia is working if it stops the vomiting. Or they act like they feel better...One or 2 days during pancreatitis she did vomit a small amt. I guess it helped her tummy & pancreas; she didn’t vomit again.

Phoebe gets a 1/4 of a 24 mg tablet. She takes everyday. I usually notice her interest in food goes up after about 30-40 mins.

Correction!!! I’m so sorry but she gets 8 mg as it is a 16 mg tablet! I’ve given so many meds lately I was confused!!! I’ve never noticed it alone helps her appetite. She always has a great appetite so that’s probably why. The only time she hasn’t eaten is with the pancreatitis. Sorry again! My bad!

Can Cerenia be given long term? I have been advised by two vets that it is not ok to give long term but my kitty has CRF and chronic nausea!!

Sam usually gets 4mg, but he's super sensitive to meds. He's usually on a lower-than-normal dose of whatever he's taking. And yes, it can be taken long term. It was originally thought that they needed a break every few days, but many chronic panc or CRF cats take it daily with no trouble.
