    Hello everybody,

It's been a while since I had not posted because my kitten was much better for 1 month 1/2 (its rates had dropped gradually and since it is very regular, I thought it would continue quietly down).
10 days ago she was very sick = vomiting + diarrhea, the vet said she had pancreatitis again due to an infection.
She had 8 days of antibiotics that made her also sick (vomiting 2 times a day because she did not support one of the 2 antibiotics).
Result = probably because of stress and increased cortisol levels, its blood sugar has increased significantly.
Since the end of treatment she is better and I see that slowly the blood glucose begins to decline but I do not know how long it will take to return to the stage where it was before that.

I think we should leave him some time at the dose of 3.75U (Caninsulin) before increasing because May 25th I put 3.75+ and the next morning I had a terrible 397!

My second question concerns chronic pancreatitis = how to treat them quickly so that they do not disturb the blood sugar of the cat every 3 or 4 months?

    Thank you for your help

    Bonjour Florine!

I'm so sorry to hear that Pounette has pancreatitis! Unfortunately, there isn't a way to make it go away. Some cats only get it once or twice and never again. Other cats get it over and over.

Here is some good information about it: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/a-primer-on-pancreatitis.83108/

I would also suggest that you look on Facebook for the group "Cats with Pancreatitis"

As for the blood sugar, when they are sick, you have to raise the dose to keep it under control as best you can, and then as they heal, you have to be prepared to lower the dose back down. You are testing at home already, so you can see when to make the adjustments.

While some vets will prescribe antibiotics or steroids, for most cats they don't work to resolve the pancreatitis. If you read the link above, you will see the treatments that can help manage their symptoms, but it's often just time that heals.

Thank you Djamila for all this information, I have already been reported elsewhere that there was a rapid test (IDEXX) to confirm the diagnosis of pancreatitis, I will talk to my vet next time because it has never done it yet .
On your documentation I see that the cat must have fasted for at least 6 hours to do this test is important information that I had not read before;)
what surprises me in all that I read about pancreatitis is that apparently all cats suffer from anorexia, which is not the case with my kitten, despite the vomiting, she is always so hungry, probably because she had lost weight compared to the consultation 1 month ago ...
I think this really requires a screening test when it shows new symptoms.

It is very odd to be very hungry with pancreatitis. Was a test run to confirm that is actually the issue? Usually antibiotics are not given for pancreatitis.

Quintus hasn't, and he has chronic pancreatitis. I'd say we should be happy our pancreatic cats are eating!

I'll give @Florine & Pounette the link but as she doesn't speak English I fear participation in an anglophone Facebook group will be tricky. But maybe she can read useful information in there with the translation links.

My previous kitty ate throughout his panc flares. If indeed panc is what your dealing with multiple times, try to get a supply of meds to have on hand so you can start immediately to help lessen the severity. Also since your home testing, if you notice readings seem to be rising and there is no other reason (teeth, constipation, infection etc) then consider a flare up and get the meds started.

@tiffmaxee, no, the IDEXX quick test was not done, I'll ask it next time if it happens again (I did not know there was such a test, my vet did not tell me about it)
And thankfully she eats because despite everything she still lost 200g or 300g in 15 days at that time :(

I think the veterinarian was not wrong for the antibiotics, the stool had a nauseating odor not usual and since the end of treatment this smell has disappeared ... I read that some pancreatitis were due to bacterial infections and that in this case the antibiotics were necessary but the problem is that they often make the cat vomit, that's what happened to mine, it has amplified the vomiting.
