Back in November, Zulu had an issue with constipation. The poor guy was really trying but couldn't go, ended up puking all over the place exorcist-style, and had to be brought to the vet for an enema. They suggested putting a small amount of Miralax in his food for a little while and gradually decrease the dose.

Last night we had the same issue. Literally the minute before we were going to grab him and put him in the carrier, he passed a very large, uncomfortable looking bm (in the kitchen, but that's preferable to the carpet).

So we're back on Miralax, plus adding extra water to his food. Any tips for long term care/prevention? I felt so terrible for him, would like to avoid this again if possible. I'd also like to keep his diet the same though, since he went into remission after the switch to ProPlan.

You can try adding pure pumpkin to his meals and give miralax daily. It's better to prevent it from happening.

My Smokey got pumpkin (whatever fit on end of butter knife) mixed in each meal. And 1/4 tsp miralax mixed in each overnight meal (he was fed every 3 hrs). Kept him regular.

Olive gets a bit in one meal. She goes twice a day but it's slowing moving to get it out.

Is it safe to use Miralax long term?

I believe so. Smokey got it for 7 months every night. Make sure you give extra water.

I use to mix the powder 1/4 tsp in each of his overnight meals and put an ice cube in the pile of food. So when it melted he'd get some extra water and it kept food fresh. I used 2 compartment feeder.

Dusty has the same problem so he's been on Miralax for over 4 years now with no ill effects. You just have to adjust the dosage so his poop isn't too soft. I sprinkle a little in each meal (FF) and mix it in with a little water.

Sometime Miralax isn't good enough and Lactulose (script) is needed. Bronx is on both along with numerous other things like fish oil, pumpkin seed oil, hemp seed oil, Smooth BM gold drops, ground flax seed & pumpkin.
