Hi folks...decided to start new thread bc I had two going at same time and was getting confusing
Good and bad news...I started Mor on zenoquin bc several in the know ppl from Tanyas forum said he should be given a course of Ab's in case he truly has pyelonephritis which vets were only able to suspect ...not conclude...just started yesterday...
bad news...Mor Mor's condition is worsening...he is weaker and not eating as much ...he ate only half a can of friskies all through the night last night and the zenoquin could be upsetting his tummy...and last night I had to give him extra buprenephrine bc he was really trembling...vet said his pain level is not coming from kidney failure as he is only in stage two...my new vet does not suspect pyelonephritis at all but the radiologist said it was 50/50....she suspect neoplasia of some kind which would be a less scary sounding word than cancer...so does the online vet I deal with...online vet told me diagnosis of kidney infection from the ultrasound is not going to be a for sure thing necessarily. .but an "interpretation " at best as bacteria are not always seen in the urine culture if it is particularly dilute OR that particular sample of urine just didnt show any sheddings of bacteria...
This is very very hard as it is for all of us as IF he has pyelonephritis the antibiotic takes at least ten days to two wks to show ANY improvement and he also must take them for two months...his pain and nausea level are almost making his QOL compromised to the pt that I dont know if this is fair to him anymore...he is still roaming the yard but his purring and relaxation modes have stopped (even on the pain med..and an increased max dose of it)...he no longer lets me rub his belly and is often very tired and distant looking...I cannot relax for a minute it seems as THE day may be coming sooner than later...if these antibiotics affect his appetite I will be in further doubt as to if this is fair anymore...mirtazepine helps but if he is nauseated mirtazepine is just unfair IMO...oh boy...well...signing off wishing health and wellness to you and your furbabies...ultimately nothing lives forever and noone gets out of this alive....I know I will have regrets if I dont try everything ...so here goes EVERYTHING right?
Love and fizzy pickles to all...Allison and Mor Mor...

That's a lot to deal with Allison. I had to Google "Neoplasia in Cats", I'm not very with it today. It's cancer, it's not cancer, it's benign, it's malignant. This is too much for me today, more family drama and I'm pretty sure you're on information overload. Maybe someone else knows more.
This is Noah's dose of transdermal BUPE.
0.16mg/0.1ml Apply 0.05 ml every 12 hours. It doesn't get him stoned, he's okay with stairs and it doesn't interfere with his appetite.
All it does is tickle his ears and I can split the dose any way I want, every 4 hours or every 6 as long as I do the math.
I spilled my guts in Truly at a loss / Community & Off Topic today, maybe you'll get some insight there.
Big bear hugs for now, remember you're not alone. :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

Sorry, should have said this before. In Nigel's last days we doubled his BUPE, then doubled it again. He could still walk, knew where he was and who we were. That's medical advice so please do not go ahead and do it on your own. We need to be absolutely clear on this.
Most cats can tolerate BUPE quite well but it means no more outside/unsupervised time.

Hi Mia's mom (is your name Marissa?)...and hi Dickson ...thx for your continued support...it means way more than you know...otherwise I am in this alone completely...given up on Tanyas site bc my posts NEVER seem to get posted....my terrific news is that today Mor Mor is active and eating...I was truly scarexd that the AB's would cause him to stop eating altogether...its been a scary 24 hrs...totally touch and go...Dickson...the info u gave me about Bupe is invaluable to me as I have not trusted myself to increase his dosage bc I thought it was tantamount to criminal....dont worry I am not taking it as med advise...just happy I am not alone i having to make tough decisions with noone elses' input...I was told I can give Mor up to .5ml every 12 hrs by new vet!! Other vet (old one I didnt trust as much) said max is .2ml...this was a HUGE relief to Mor Mor and I bc without this new allowable dosage I would not be able to continue with anything ...the online vet said .2mls every six hrs!! that is even better...no spikes ot troughs....!I am quite thrilled to see how well he has tolerated his first dose...it could have gone the other way...my strong feeling is Mor likely has cancer ...time will not necessarily tell as many cancers are not easily detectable without the gamet of tests I cant afford...

I've never seen Tanya's site but if it's the Tanya from here I know she has a heart of gold and will stand with you. Maybe a technical problem? Maybe it's not the same Tanya.
BUPE and drugs like it were created for one purpose only, pain management. Because Nigel had a sad story doesn't mean Mor will.
I have to leave the house soon, when your heart is strong read the story in Community.

There are a couple of meds that are very effective for controlling nausea. Check with your vet, giving them shouldn’t be a problem. Hope that helps. Tons of vines for Mor Mor! :bighug:

thx Squalliiesmom....I have managed to get scripts for cerenia and zofran ...it isnt easy where I live in Vancouver Canada to get these meds for some reason (on long term basis)...I am afraid they may not be enough as zenoquin is causing Mor inappetance...but maybe his body will adjust to the new AB...he has been very unwell as of late...with occasional ok times...hoping and praying for a miracle...he is unfortunately showing body tremors and twitching again which makes me worry he is having neurological issues causing his pain...

Maybe some probiotics would help? You’d have to give several hours between the AB, but maybe it could help his gut recover.

How much mirtazapine is he taking? It can cause neurological problems like the ones you describe, especially if taken for long periods of time.

Mor has only had it four times...i can't give it to him in liquid form as he nearly throws it up ....so just now i successfully gave him some in pill form...I feel just awful forcing pills into him...it is not getting easier...I have started using a "pill popper thing" which helps but I have to hold his little head so hard to open his mouth and he cries as I am doing it...he has to take zenoquin every 12 hrs now in the hopes that in two weeks i may see an improvement in him if he indeed has the "suspected " pyelonephritis ...this is really difficult and stressful on both of us...and now zenoquin is causing even more inappetance...I just pray this is not putting him through unnecessary discomfort ...my only hope for his life getting better is that he does in fact have pyelonephritis and that in a month to two months of this zenoquin AB he will improve...its almost too much for both of us...

I just absolutely despise giving Baby pills, meds of any kind! I feel for you as I just went through this with Baby. IBD diagnosis. I just can’t medicate her anymore! She’s stopped sleeping with me & I feel she hates me. Why oh why? Wasn’t loosing her eyes enough God? Give us a break! Right?!? :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

    Hello Alison,
despite my name I have no connection to Tanya's CKD site ;)- nor am I experienced with the disease ...but:
I believe I read in one of your posts that you were feeding Friskies or Fancy Feast, is that right?
If yes you might want to research a little into which wet foods are low in Phosphorous content and replace FF/Friskies with it.
The FF or Fris. formulae may be different in Canada but in the US both are awfully high in P per can if compared to some other brands (which are more expensive). Keeping the P level below 2oo per 100 Kcal is as crucial for kidney problem as the hydration via SQF.
I am not saying it will cure his CKD - but it might help slowing its development and might perhaps he'll feel better over all.
Check out the FAQ section - I think I saw somewhere the list of Canadian foods.
I hope things will improve for both of you!
I was not following your story and I do not if Leon is on insulin dose. Is he?
I observed both symptoms in my cat when her BG is very low.

    Hi Becky and Tanya..

Becky how did Baby lose her eyes?...youbknow when I saw her pic I thought she was just squinting!...remember I tolf you how cute she was?...I have a thing for gray kitties...you dont have to give her any meds or sub q fluids ?...I now have cerenia in a needle form...so that takes one pill away...w got the vet to show me how to do it...omg...she did it so easily i have much more confidence now in that it can be done with ease...
Tanya hi!....thx for info on foods...I really did not know low phos was that crucial...I will definitely check out the list for cad foods low on phosphorus ...he had hiz checked in april and CAD it was 1.12? Is this too high?? No vet has told me the important of this...so thank you! Mor Mor is feeling good today ...which means my day will be good too...could use the break myself ....just like Mor Mor...vet said cerenia must not be given every day as this can cause twitching and trembling behaviors....never heard this either...it has a cumulative effect...so I temporarily switched to zofran now every five days and give him two day break...

as I said I have no experience, sorry.
If I am not mistaken the recommendation to start looking for low P foods comes a little later down the road - probably stage 2 CKD is not advanced as to suggest it. In my eye it never hurt to start preventively and it is easy enough to switch foods, I am sure it won't hurt.

I am going to tag Lizzie @LizzieInTexas because her Gizmo has CKD and she was handling it for a while now.

Lizzy, was my rec on food correct and what else would you do in this case?

Hi Dickson...I never got any messages for a week from you folks...did i say something wrong...? it was kinda weird...
Mor is not long for this world...I had home euthanasia scheduled for him today...but cancelled...he likely has a brain tumor...

That is my sad news...several vets have suggested all along that he has had a neurological condition of some kind...been treating him for pyelonephritis...

How is Noah and I hope your headaches arent coming around as often...!

Oh I had hoped Mor Mor would be better! My heart breaks.
I must have missed this post-so sorry! Baby had iritis with absolutely no symptoms that quickly developed into glaucoma. She kept her eyes for awhile with drops but soon had to have them removed. No reason other than congenital possibly. I had to take her to an eye specialist to get a correct dx & medication. First one went & shortly after the 2nd eye began to swell. Bless you & I’m sorry you have to go through this! :bighug::bighug:
I’m glad you mentioned the cerenia as an injection. I will ask my vet for this! Thank you
