Hello friends...I am thinking of adopting this beautiful kitty from a local shelter here...apparently she is a pure breed maine coon and I know 30 Plus percent of this breed is genetically predisposed to HCM...I am more scared of this particular condition than any other bc of the possibility of the dreaded and sudden pulmonary embolisms that can happen. .does anyone know if these blood clots can be successfully prevented should this kitty turn out to have this diagnosis ?

In my experience if HCM is diagnosed early and they start giving the the proper meds is a controlable disease (no garantee ) and the advance of it can be slowed to a degree.

Considering the breed disposition you could schedule an eco cardiogram and electrocardiogram once a year just to be sure as part of his annual check up that way in the worst case scenario you could catch it early

thanks Veronica with the cutest kitty...babu looks like Himalayan cross with siamese...there is one at our local shelter here...I wont take her bc shes so cute she will have no trouble finding a home...the kitty I want to take home will as she is not friendly...but I like a bit of cattitude and I like to help the hard to adopt ones...good grief...shes been in a da** cage since April 4th...that is torture for a cat...I honestly do not feel comfortable with her genetic predisposition for HCM...I have dealt with this and it can be an unfortunate end for these kitties...I wish breeders would stop breeding cats with terrible propensities like this and breeding animals (persians for example) that can hardly breathe properly...how did the human race get to be like this...anyway that is just me on a rant...I will stop now! before I get going...! there is a genetic test to find out if they carry the gene but I just love her already ....going back today to see her...cheers!

Could you have the dna test done? It sounds like you decided already. My current kitty (has Persian in her) was just dx in March and my previous kitty had it. She is on benazepril.

Thanks he's the sweetest and most loving boy you can imagine but yes he's a purebred seal point Himalayan with a pedigree that would make many envious, but with obviously all the genetic load of his breed ( which I really didn't knew about util I had adopted him and it was love at first sight so I would have adopted him regardless) and I totally agree with you about breeding practices so won't start complaining about the careless breeders either because I would not end (I have him and 2 other Himmies so take your pick on genetic problems )

Give her a ton of screeches for me and congratulations to you in advance since it appears that you made up your mind

Sam has some Himalayan/Persian in him. No one really knows, he just showed up at the back door soaking wet and filthy.
He was nervous, now he's not.
( his eyes are clean now ;))

Sam is very handsome and lucky that you adopted him, I can't see his eye colour but yes he surely has at least some persian
