    Hi Everybody,

    Cyrus from Canada here.

I LOVE my cat Shaniqua but I'm having issues.
She's peeing SO much, it's really a drag, to put it lightly. The box is beyond gross, I have to change it EVERY DAY!
I took her to the vet and she had a UTI and was diagnosed with Diabetes.
Just like me! The Diabetes I mean, not the UTI.
The Dr, who took 2 visits before she figured out she was bleeding from a UTI, told me to give her insulin.
I'm on insulin too...is it okay to give her my insulin? I had a fight with my vet because I told her I was really broke and could not afford to pay more than $150 and when the bill came it was $290, she charged me for every little thing...which I understand..but when I left the first time I asked her if I would have to pay for a follow up to see if she was doing okay and she told me no...THEN CHARGED ME $200! It was the first time I saw her so I'll go to a different vet next time. I'm in a small town and they treat a lot of cows, maybe she got mixed up?) I don't feel like talking to her so I am turning to cyberspace.
I was told all insulin is the same but after reading some of the postings here I'm not so sure because the kind of insulin I use is called Humulin and I take it by pen. I haven't read where anyone uses that kind?
I give her a tiny tiny bit, but maybe I shouldn't be? She hasn't had any adverse reactions or anything but I don't want to do it if it might hurt her.
She's spoiled rotten, she really thinks she's all that but she hasn't given me any attitude about the insulin, she just let's me do it...of course I distract her just before i stick it in and before ya know it it's all over.

Another thing that's really worrying me is she has this pouch on her belly the size of a baseball, it swings back and forth when she walks like a set of balls, I try not to shame her but i have to laugh!! The vet said it contains small tumors and I can have them removed if I want but if she's not showing any discomfort not to worry about it...until they start to get bigger...does anyone know about this?

I CAN'T BELIEVE how big this forum is, there are so many cats with Diabetes, I had no idea!

I'm sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong area.

    Thank you for any advice,

    Cyrus

Welcome Cyrus. Yes, there are a great many cats with diabetes, I'm sorry to say. But this is a great place to educate yourself and take good care of Shaniqua. First, it would be a good idea to make a signature and tell us more about Shaniqua. The signature is the gray text below my post, for example, and gives members pertinent information before making a response. Here is a link about the signature and how to make it.

You mention that you are diabetic, and presumably you test yourself. Are you testing your cat also? Same principle, different technique, and as you know, extremely important. Members use a spreadsheet to track the home testing blood glucose levels, and review the spreadsheet when asked to respond regarding insulin dosage etc.

I suggest you post your questions regarding the type of insulin you are asking about, if it is ok to use for your cat, in the Main Forum. More members check that forum to help with questions and concerns.

You should check out the information in the Index of the Health Links/FAQs Feline Diabetes forum to get started :http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/index-health-links-faqs.194624/

Farm vets live in a different world. In a worst case scenario cats are third class citizens kept in a barn for mouse control and there's a 22 behind the door for euthanasia. I grew up in that world, it's not a joke.
With some luck you may get Shaniqua stabilized to the point you'll be ordering everything but insulin online. We can help you with everything; what meter to use, doing curves, warning signs etc. Noah is our second diabetic cat, this is second nature to me now but I wish I had found this place years ago. There is always more to know.
We have a lot of Canadians here too.

Just what is printed on the pen? Humulin is the trade name for a family of insulins and not all are suitable for cats.
    https://www.humulin.com/other-humulin-products.aspx#70-30
Also, the pen can only be dosed in nor more than 1 unit increments and many time 1/4 or 1/2 unit increments are required for cats
