    yesterday: viewtopic.php?p=220002#p220002

    We're still here! Thanks again to everyone for the terrific help and support yesterday!

    Stu is a bit under the weather this morning. He only ate about half of the food in his automat last night and the quantity of pee this morning was large. But he had breakfast #1 and some chicken chunks with yogurt (this is really working to keep his intestines in good shape) and was outside briefly to check out the surroundings. The rest of the time so far he has spent in his basket. (Whoops, he just made an appearance in my study, probably because he wants his next test!) As soon as I get the +3 I'm going to the vet to get the paper copy of the hyperthyroid tests (already reported late in yesterday's condo). Stu "scored" high for both tests and I think we are going to do the I-131 treatment (radiation in a facility, a 1-time cure, but apparently quite expensive). I will be checking into that today. Off now to do the +3. Be right back. +3 189. It's a steep drop, but I'll take it!! Stu is feeling a lot better than early this morning. He's acting normally.
    I hope you all have a good day and that all the other kitties are fine.

    I just read the rest of your thread from last night. I think if you can get Stu in for the I-131 treatment, it would make everything else much easier to deal with. You sure have a lot on your plate right now, but I'm glad to hear that you are being so positive. It never helps to be depressed and negative. I'm glad Stu likes the cookout, too. I didn't think it was too high in carbs - isn't it only 5%? I don't remember what Stu was eating before.

    Nice blue number at +3! :D Have a great day, Ella.

    Good Morning Ella, yes that's a big drop, but it looks good to see blue, right?
    I'm going to try those chicken chunks for after test treats, since Stu like it so well. Checkers runs into kitchen looking for tuna treat.
    I'm glad he's starting to feel better, this morning. :smile:

    Hi again, I've added to my list of test results that I posted the other day the results for the T4 and Free T4 and the Cortisol, Resting (see below). These are all the results we will have until 25 August, when the vet will do another round.

    Stu's lab-test results, 08/09/10 (reference range in ( ) ) (don't have ref. range for USG) (no results for calcium or phosphorus)

    HCT = 37.3 % (24.0 - 45.0)
    HGB = 12.1 g/dL (8.0 - 15.0)
    MCHC = 32.4 g/dL (30.0 - 36.9)
    WBC = 11.6 x109 /L (5.0 - 18.9)
    GRANS = 9.1 x109 /L (2.5 - 12.5)
    %GRANS = 78 %
    L/M = 2.5 x109 /L (1.5 -7.8)
    %L/M = 22 %
    PLT = 585 x109 /L (175 - 500) (high)

    ALB = 3.4 g/dL (2.3 - 3.9)
    ALKP < 10 U/L (14 - 111)
    ALT = 172 U/L (12 - 130) (high)
    BUN = 41 mg/dL (16 -36) (high)
    CREA = 2.7 mg/dL (0.8 - 2.4) (high)
    GLOB = 4.6 g/dL (2.8 - 5.1)
    TBIL = 0.4 mg/dL (0.0 - 0.9)
    TP = 8.1 g/dL (5.7 - 8.9)
    Glucose = 172 g/dL
    USG = 1.020

    The following thyroid test results from ANTECH Diagnostics:

    T4 = 7.4 ug/dL (0.8 - 4.0) (high)
    Free T4 = 90 pmol/L (10 - 50) (high)
    Cortisol, Resting = 9.0 ug/dl (1.0 - 4.5) (high)

    On 25 August the vet will also check Stu's blood pressure and do the tests for phosphorus, calcium, and potassium, in addition to re-testing the above. In the meantime we will start Stu on the thyroid medication Methimazole this evening. Edward and I have decided that we will have the I-131 radiation treatment for Stu and will consult with his vet with regard to when we can have it done (we have already decided where: Hypurrcat in NYC, providing that Stu's diabetes will not disqualify him!). But we think it is prudent, while we are doing the research, to start Stu on the Methimazole, even though it will have to be discontinued before we can begin I-131. It sure is complicated, but we are getting so much help here. Special thanks to Cassandra and WCF, and, of course, many, many thanks to everyone.

    I looked up the Merrick numbers, Cowboy Cookout is 5% carbs. If Stu likes that try Southern Delight 4% and Surf 'n Turf 3%, and they are both only 157 phos.

    I'm wondering why the vet was running cortisol. I would expect it to be high from stress. If it was to rule out Cushings, you need a day long urine catch.

    In any event, I'm glad Stu is feeling better and his numbers look this good.

    CBC looks fine, no worries there.

    ALT is liver value. Think Cassandra mentioned it could be elevated b/c of thyroid too?

    USG suggests kidney insufficiency. But I'll defer to Cassandra, since I'm not sure how much of an influence an overactive thyroid is on kidney values. She tried to explain it to me once but my eyes just glazed over :lol:

    Does your vet run this in-house? I prefer Antech or Idexx labs - if the cost for sending out the b/w isn't too much higher, you may want to consider asking that the tests be sent out.

    Nice to see Stu back in the greens - even if only for a short while.

    Good luck with the thyroid meds. - I hope they get Stu off to a good start before the I-131. - I am glad that you have decided on the I-131. I hope he will qualify. I know it worked for us - I was pleased with the results for my kitty, we had no complications afterwards.

    Hi again Everyone,

    Stu and I had a wonderful time outdoors this evening. It was just getting dark and all the bugs were out. Stu had a great time chasing them. He looked so happy and alive that it was easy to forget about his problems!

    DH and I stopped by the vet's this afternoon to pick up the Methimazole pills and talk about the additional tests that will be done on August 25th. This afternoon I e-mailed Hypurrcat to ask if a diabetic cat could be a candidate for the I-131. Already I have received a reply that it may be possible. They included a pre-admission questionnaire for me to fill out and a request that Stu's vet fax Stu's records and blood work for Dr. Mark Peterson to review. So tomorrow I will attend to all of that and we will see what transpires.
    Edward and I both had the impression today that Stu's vet was a bit apprehensive that the I-131 cure might throw Stu into renal failure. But we think that the procedure is worth pursuing if the experts at Hypurrcat conclude that Stu would be better off having it.

    That's about it for now. Thank you all again for your thoughtful comments and expert advice and for your support. I got some reading done today, but not as much as I had hoped. Now we just have to hope that Stu will tolerate the Methimazole (We will begin tomorrow: 1 tiny pill twice a day, supposedly on an empty stomach; but since he gets "many mini meals" for his diabetes, the empty-stomach thing might not be entirely possible).

    Hugs to you all,
    Ella & Stu

    OK I'm sitting here giggling. I guess I should go to bed. Dr Peterson is an expert on FD too (but I don't think he does much if any FD stuff anymore). He used to be Gia and Quirk's vet. She says he's one of the good ones.

    Yep. Here's a good explanation: Hyperthyroidism & Elevated Liver Enzymes

    Okay....you must be kidding on that one. Your eyes glazed over? :lol: :lol: :lol:

    It is my understanding that while Hyper-T can make the creatinine look better than it actually is, it can go either way with the USG. Either kitty can get dehydrated and have a more concentrated USG or kitty can be very hydrated due to increased water intake and therefore have a lowered USG. I'm going to wager that Stu already has some renal insufficiency present outside of the other diseases given the slightly elevated creatinine and USG being low. (I like to see them above 1.040 or 1.045, but Sasha has maintained a 1.020 to 1.025 for a long time now, sans fluids) As I said yesterday, the I-131 can cause an actual renal crash in already renal kitties, and that does need to be monitored closely if you take that route. Some people on the Yahoo Hyper-T board are pretty against having the I-131 done on renal kitties for that reason, but IMHO everything that we do has some level of risk. Tapazole alone can cause many health problems. You just have to weigh your options.

    Sasha had been diabetic for about 8 months when I had her thyroid nuked. The place I took her in Chicago was very nice about it. She was on PZI at the time and I was using a Hodgkins-esq sliding scale, and they tested and shot as needed (and even called me before each injection like good peeps).

    Dr. Peterson is like the god of all things endocrine. :smile: Would be verra cool to have him for a vet!

    Do you know the Tap dose they want you to start at? With the renal disease you will want to start very low and work up if necessary.
