Last time I posted my girl Abby was having trouble with her knuckle bones coming through the pads of her front paws. Someone here suggested I order zobaline. I did and with time the knuckles retracted and the paws healed.... for a while. Then they started to fill up with pus. They’d pop. I’d get it all out. The next day, right back filled up again. Take her to the vet. She now has E. Coli??? She’s almost 13. She was a stray when I got her 11 yrs ago but she’s not been out since then. So how did she get that? We are still dealing with that and then about 3 weeks ago she had a small spot on her side with matted hair. I cut it off her. I didn’t go down to the skin but the next day, where I cut you could see her skin. By later that day it was a bigger spot. Two days later she had 3 spots. Back to the vet we go. She’s now been diagnosed with Cushings disease (she’s lost about 35 to 40 percent of her hair and her skin is paper thin) as well as diabetes. While she still has E. Coli. The vet has mentioned surgery but we both don’t think she would make it through the surgery, she just has so much going on. Plus, I literally just spent a ton on my other cat to have half of her teeth removed. Has anyone else’s cat had Cushings? Any suggestions? My vet said to try cushx drops S. Abby was diagnosed with diabetes 1 yr ago and has been unstable that entire yr. I started giving her the drops twice a day, about 2 1/2 weeks ago and she has been under 200. Lots of times in the low 100’s. So now the diabetes is becoming livable but the Cushings is kicking her butt!!
Lastly, Abby is a bit more aggressive if I take too long giving her, her meds, getting her blood, etc. she bites sometimes. Today, she got me really good on my thump. I asked my vet any chance I could get any of this stuff from Abby and his response in quite the doctorly way was “I don’t think so”!! So my entire thump is swollen down to my palm. I can’t bend it at the knuckle. Should I be concerned?

Cat bites are very serious. I would get antibiotics asap. You will probably need a tetanus shot too. I had to go to the er for a cat bite once. They gave need strong antibiotics and a tetanus shot and had me go back two days later to determine if I would need to be admitted and put on an iv antibiotic. Er dr said cat bites are much more serious than dog bites.

There's a Cushing's subforum here, have you been there yet? Also, could the E. Coli have come from food (e.g. if Abby gets raw minced meat or something sometimes) or from outdoors in the soles of somebody's shoes? Regarding the swollen thumb, other than what Jane suggested, I really don't know unfortunately. :| If I had a swelling all the way to my palm from a cat bite, I'd definitely have a doctor look at it. I hope it gets better (and Abby too)!

UTI because of E-coli is quite common and with his uncontrolled diabetes he is more suceptible to get it for it he needs antibiotics and is recommended that you do another urinalisis about a month after the first round of antibiotics to make sure he's out of it but he may need at least two rounds because getting rid of it is complicated

I suggest going to a dr to get your bite checked out. Cats can carry a bacteria that can cause what people know as 'cat scratch fever'. I was once bitten and ended up having to go to the dr's office every day for a few days to get a shot.

Thanks everyone. I looked for a forum on Cushings and didn’t see one. Thanks for putting the info here. I will definitely go there next. Abby has had 3 rounds of antibiotics. Plus she’s on antivirals because I forgot to mention she also has herpes. Still just as swollen as last night and really in pain. My mom has a nurse practitioner coming to the house this morning. Gonna have her look at it and go from there. Thanks again!!

Just an update. I went to urgent care, was told I was very lucky Abby bit me on the side of my thumb and not the front, as she probably would have hit my tendon then and I would have needed surgery. I had blood work done. As of right now. I don’t have a bacterial infection but I have redness and swelling moving up my arm. So I’m on antibiotics. If I get any worse, I’ve been told to go to the hospital. If not they want to see me again in 3 days. I was also told if I get bitten again, don’t wait almost a day before I come in.
