    Hi Everyone,

I have been reading several threads from this Forum when my cat "KEN" was diagnosed last July 30,2018. I am thankful that i found your website because i couldn't find any organization here in Philippines that supports diabetic cats and as per vet, this case is rare in Philippines. Ken is just Three years old, and i am very guilty that it happened to him as i free-fed him since he was young with dry kibbles. But the vet told me that Ken's diabetes is in his genes.

The vet started to give him Lantus (solo star Pen)Two units once a day on the first day of treatment because the findings was 258 mg/dl and then 2nd day and 3rd day another two units of insulin once a day. when we did those shots in 3 days, Ken responded and the result came out to be 100 mg/dl. then the vet tried to do every other day of two units dosage. however, the sugar level is rising up for about 177 mg/dl. then he tried to do every 2 days after which become 214 mg/dl. Today the vet run the test and i was shocked that his sugar level rise to 432 mg/dl (we only skipped one day of not taking the insulin). The vet decided to do once a day everyday and he said that this could be lifetime treatment for Ken.

Now, i have to start doing the Injection and glucose monitoring on my own. He told me to give 2 units once a day for one week, if ever the sugar level goes down i have to skip and do the dosage in the other day. with regards to food i have changed his diet but at first i mixed the fancy feast with Chicken breast fillet and chicken hearts. but i think the mixed food that i did is not helpful. Tomorrow i will buy fancy feast. hope everything will back to normal.

I hope i can do this and help Ken to lengthen his life as i want him to live and be with him until he gets old.

PS: anyone can recommend supplement for diabetic cats? that can strengthen their immune system without increasing sugar level.

Once again, i am thankful that i found you guys!

Good morning and welcome Sasha and Ken. First there isn't any definitive way that I know of to tell what caused Ken's diabetes, many many of us fed dry kibble. The fact of diabetes is what you have to deal with now and it would be a time and energy waster to beat yourself up. You have come to the best place you never wanted to be to help Ken and give him the best treatment.
You have already created your signature and spreadsheet, well done!! I see you are using Lantus and it's a very good long acting insulin.
I encourage you to post in the Lantus forum regarding the dosing schedule the vet has given you, and all the up and down changes. Lantus should be given every 12 hours, I am not a long time member, but I have read that a sliding schedule with Lantus is not a good idea. Take this question to the people who do know. Here is a link to that forum: Lantus Forum
They can also answer your questions about feeding and supplements. All general health questions about feeding, supplements, etc can also be posted on the Main Forum.
Sasha, the people in the Lantus forum will help you, the sooner you post there, the sooner you are going to be less confused and be able to take better care of Ken.
