Am I missing something? He swallowed 2 feet but only 1 foot has come up so half the ribbon is still in him yes/no?
    From you Allison
post80 "and yes foreign linear objects and I suspect other less ominous ones CAN remain in cats' bodies for many many months...static...I guess...odd but true...but they can very suddenly rear their ugly heads should something change and they can obstruct and destroy portions of your pets intestines"

post85 "I would get a warning ...like vomiting or not eating or feeling noticeably unwell"

post87 "I have heard pieces like this can get into his intestines and wreak havoc..but I will get a warning before he will require emergency surgery. .vomiting...lethargy...no pooping"
    >Only one of four things will happen. He poops it out, he vomits it out, it breaks down in his system, it comes out through surgery.
If he puked it up in pieces and it has not broken down then pooping it out will be very painful and the sharp edges may cut him.
    >You never answered my question about they type of ribbon, plant based or synthetic which goes to my thought of it breaking down naturally.
    >If he pukes the rest up is there a chance he may choke on it? Are you ready for this to happen at home?
    >More than once you have said you will "thankfully" get a warning. That could mean anything. Beenie is your cat, it's not my business but like the rest of us you made him a promise when you adopted him. Look at your words in red. You're playing with fire.
Jill offered you financial help, did you look yet? A forever home has to mean something.

Here is what is bad about a cat eating a string/ribbon
"f any portion of a linear item becomes anchored anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract, problems can occur. The intestines will try to work the linear item through and towards the anus. But if the item is anchored, it can’t be moved. Instead, the intestines move themselves, and natural intestinal motility causes the intestines to become bunched up. This bunching leads may lead to life-threatening blockage of the intestines that requires surgery or endoscopy to correct.

"As the intestines bunch, pressure placed on them by the foreign body or by the bunching itself may cause perforations in the intestinal walls. Thin, strong foreign bodies also have the potential to directly lacerate the intestines. Intestinal contents (including loads of bacteria) can then leak through the perforations and lacerations, leading to sepsis and death."

Barium is opaque to rays and thus shows white on the x-rays. It is also very thick. First a baseline x-ray is taken Then the cat is syringed some of the barium and x-rays take and time intervals. The x-arys will show if anything is obstructing the intestines. A linear string would not show on an x-ray but balled up string/ribbon might show. Ribbon would only show of wide enough and if the x-ray beam was exactly parallel to the ribbon

I'd like to link the thread Allison has now started strictly for purposes of continuity and clarity:
    hip degeneration.
As far as I can tell, half of the 2 foot piece of ribbon/string eaten remains inside of Beanie. From there the subject appears to have jumped to hip degeneration and surgery after an x-ray was done during the ribbon incident.

    Allison, color me confused...
how/when was the ribbon/string issue resolved? Did he pass or vomit up the remaining 12 inches of string/ribbon he ingested last Monday evening?

Hi Jill...sry for the confusion...I did not realize I had changed the course of thread as Beanie has had two sudden different issues...yes he vomited up the ribbon and appears in fine spirits...should I create a new thread for his hip degeneration...not sure ??

Dickson...thank you for your text and yes a forever home means Beabie gets any and all necessary vet care he needs...the ribbon was synthetic and as far as the amt consumes forgive me if I confused you...it was one to two feet in my BEST ESTIMATION as I did not have a measurement of the ribbon and had barely noticed its exact length before Beabie injested it...I gathered from your text you were suggesting I do something further as to avoid any future disasters....and no I am not willing to take a chance that he would vomit up more ribbon and choke on it while doing so...I specifically asked the vet if this was a possibility as I thought it could be...he said no to that particular scenario which was a great relief to me...
I didnt catch your direction as to what I should do further...??

I am waiting to hear back from the vet regarding what else I should do at this point for Beanie (not Beabie...lol)...he is not in today so hope to hear from him tommorow...I changed the spelling from Beenie to Beanie ...just like it better bc his name is short for Beanbag!...

I really appreciate everyone's ideas and support here...differing opinions in some cases but all relevant to Beanie's well-being ...he is curled up sleeping peacefully next to me...

I'm not sure either, Allison. You might have better luck on a message board dealing with general feline health or problems with the feline skeletal system. However, I am very happy to hear the issue with the ingested ribbon is suddenly resolved.
I'm not Dickson, but yes, Allison... I'll be honest and extremely transparent... you've confused me (and it looks like I'm not the only one) because I was going by what you said... your words... and this isn't the first time. I'll just leave it at that...

Thanks Jill for the feedback...and your candor...both are appreciated...I thought this "main forum " WAS for feline general health...I will seek another forum if this topic is not appropriate to talk about Beanie's health issues....now I guess I should be candid with you....thank you for pointing out that I have confused not only yourself ( on more than one occasion ) but others aswell...it is important for me to know this so I can attempt to be more clear in future in the best interests of Beanie's health.. . .I do suffer from short term memory loss from a head injury so I can only do my best ...at times I feel overwhelmed with questions ...I thank you in advance for a your understanding...Allison

You are in the correct forum to post health issues. I think what she meant was that you should start a different thread for the hip generation in this forum. Since this post was originally about eating string, members that can offer help for the hip problems may not see your questions because the topic of this post is different.
