Hi all. Grandpa is straining to go, but only passes a little liquid. What is a good dose of Miralax? How often? I don't want to give him too much and push him the other way.

I started Phoebe on 1/8 of teaspoon and worked up to 1/4. Twice a day. Definitely don't want to go opposite way. I worry tho with him straining and seeing liquid come out only. Hopefully some more exsperience will come along. :bighug: I wish you both could catch a break

If you are seeing only liquid coming out, he is constipated inside. Rex has had that a couple times. I massaged his belly for a few minutes and that seemed to help. If Grandpa continues to strain and seems to be in pain, you may have to assist him or bring him to the vet for an enema. :bighug:

I started with 1/8 t with Max. Sounds like your boy might need an enema. :bighug:

This is an important reference for anyone dealing with a constipated cat.

I agree an enema may be required if nothing big happens soon. The other signs to watch for in addition to straining are vomit due to strain / pressure.

One other thing with miralax - you will want to add as much water as possible to any food. Hydration is of critical importance when fighting constipation. If you are seeing liquid now, I worry about that leading to dehydration which then can cause a series of other problems. I know you don't need more problems, so best just trying to avoid them...

Beck , when Elmo backs up I give 1/8 teaspoon organic cold presssed coconut oil . I always first work from the front end to try to move it along . If I have to give enema I use a fleet baby enema bottle , full of warm water , Vaseline on the nozzle ... I get as much water in as I can more than worrying ab how far in the nozzle goes . And if he starts pitching a fit , I stop . I’m a big chicken that way

I've heard of coconut oil, but not cold pressed coconut oil. Does the cold pressed make it work better or differently? I agree with working from the front end. We have one of the enema kits from the vet, but I really don't want to do it if we don't need to.

Beck, far as I know the organic, cold pressed is the purest form of coconut oil. We take it mainly for brain health ...did a bunch of research on it when SIL was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. It’s amazing stuff . Some say there are possible side effects in cats but as Lucy/Squallie and I were discussing , at Elmo, Squallie and Grandpa’s age/stage they need to poop ... that to me outweighs anything else. Sending tons of prayers and love to you both ❤️

PS .... I detest enemas and give them as last resort. We’ve done it from time to time but I seriously would rather be hit with a big stick then give my kitty an enema . DH swears it upsets me more than them

I'l look for some tomorrow. Thank you! For now we gave 1/8 teaspoon Miralax with some baby food. We also gave 100 mls of subq fluids. I evacuated the other regulars from my bedroom and have a clean litter box so I'll know if he goes tonight. I sure hope he doesn't need an enema.

    I agree!

When he wouldn't eat, we let him eat some a/d. I wonder if that's contributing.

Thanks! I agree with not creating more problems. We gave a tiny bit of Miralax and gave him 100mls of subq fluids.

It is hard (no pun intended ) to be patient and let the Miralax work but, IMO, slower is better. I divide it up between his food within the cycle so he gets a bit in each.

    Poo vines.

I have had good luck with coconut oil also with Bubba. I am a bit heavy handed and give approximately 1/2 tsp or more. My cats love it!!!
