Finally chose a vet and Taffy is getting his dental today. Dropped him off... Trying not to worry too much. Hate this.

Paws crossed for Taffy today, that all will be well. Remember to breathe mama, he's going to be ok. I hate the dentals too, but Idjit hates them more! I wish we could teach them to brush and floss on their own!

Thank you for the well wishes. Dr. just called, Taffy did well, had a lot of teeth removed. I can't pick him up for a couple more hours.

He may not want to eat tonight with the extractions. If you have any meat only baby food that might work. You may not want to give the full dose of insulin if he's not eating well. I hope he recovers quickly. Sending prayers.

Does everyone have their own doc do the dental or do any of you use a pet dentist.

It totally depends on the caretaker....and the ability of the vet......not all vets have the equipment to do dental x-rays and that's a very important part of a complete dental....also, if your cat has other medical problems, some people are more comfortable going to a dental specialist.

Thank you, everyone! Taffy says hello... He is doing really well after his dental, and has good health reports otherwise. He is a little bit slowed down with age, but looks great and is still furry & purry! We don't do TR anymore, as I am convinced that he will be on insulin for the long haul, and I need sleep!

I have been on line for 2 days trying to find a D.V.M. that is a dentist or dental specialist, I found 1. He is almost 100 miles away, that is 1 way and he charges $ 151.00 per office visit. I don't want Buddy to go somewhere and then have problems because of his diabetes. Do any of you use your normal vet or do most of you see a specialist.

I use our regular vet but I made sure she had dental x-ray equipment and was familiar with dentals on diabetic cats

The nearest specialist for me is 300+ miles

I thought that I could find a doc and get this done without my vet knowing about it, because I am sure she will want to do it. The only 1 that I found wants a copy of all his records and a referral from his vet, plus the distance and cost.

    Thank you!
I, too, was very nervous about the dental and did not know where to go. I was set to settle for a vet I don't love to do it (I think the procedure would have been fine but the guy way over charges and I don't like him much) and had the pre-dental bloodwork with him ($440!).
I went for free 2nd opinion consult at another local vet and loved her, and she knew all the right answers regarding dental. She was great! She is regular practice, very cat experienced.

Keep searching, ask questions. I hope you find a vet you feel confident in.
