    "Yesterday's 911 Emergency"

Kylee is doing good today. I thank all you here that helped me. I so appreciate it. I felt confident in all of you and in my God. I am going to take it easy and so is my girl. We earned a low key day. I will be more careful with her insulin and keep learning. It is so different from when I get my low blood glucose. I I was thinking her low BG needed to shot.....just the opposite. Don't shoot. I know that, I just was not thinking. This was one of the most frightening thing I have had to go through. Worse than the first time in the beginning of our journey with FD.
Before I shut down for the night I made sure she had food in the kitchen (ff mixed with honey like Chris and China said.) I did the same for food upstairs. I did give her some dry DM food but she only ate 5-6 pieces. That is what worked first time, even though she had a depot the first time. At least this is what I understand. I know the dry works slower, but it seemed to work again. I may not be as lucky but in my heart I felt this was right.
I gave her some love and a kiss and prayed she would be safe and meet me in the morning. She did. We are on my bed and feel some relief. Her AM BG was 97. I will test her in a few hours.
I will go over all the notes from my post last night and make sure I understand all that was everyone was trying to convey to me in my frantic state. I do know I did what was best by giving he honey and the wet food and gravy. Thank you all again for you support.

I'm very glad Kylee made it through the night and you are both OK.

I want to offer a bit of perspective on low numbers. With Lantus, it is possible and often desirable to shoot low numbers. I would shoot anything that was over 50, providing it wasn't a dropping number. However, it took me time to get to the point where:

    • I was comfortable shooting low;
    • Knew how my cat responded to high/medium/low carb food and under what circumstances;
    • Had LOTS of data.
If you look at the sticky note on Shooting & Handling Low Numbers, the first section discusses how to become data ready.

I'd encourage you to print out the linked sticky note. Having information on how to deal with low numbers is essential especially if there is a problem with the Board or your computer. It also gives you information on what hypoglycemia looks like.

I read the post early this morning and was indeed fearful for Kylee. I am so glad that she survived.

Just one comment that I would like to make...often after a kitty has a severe hypo like Kylee did they are more sensitive to insulin so besides dropping her dose you should monitor very carefully at the next shot.

What a sigh of relief. Best news of the day! :)

Renee, Kylee's numbers will probably be high at PMPS time. Unusually we'd expect a cat to bounce from such low numbers. It's normal. Don't be concerned.

    About dosing...
I believe Chris/China mentioned dropping her dose down to 0.5u the other day. I think that's a good idea... even if you see a high preshot number this evening.

As a precaution (just in case Kylee doesn't bounce), please post her PMPS number and ask for advice prior to giving insulin tonight.

Thank you, I am so sorry I kept you up. I appreciate it so much.Did you make it to church? Or was that someone else. The day and night is all mushed together. On a personal note. I Have hypoglycemia, glaucoma, Hashimoto's thyroid disease and IC. It is a struggle some days, most days. I can't expect anyone to understand why I did treatment at home, it was a choice. I watched out for her and my heath too. I read the others members posts and how upset they were with me for my decision, but like you said no one walks in my shoes. I know my hubby was worried about us both. I am watching her closely and will make sure I test today. He BG was 97, but I am not sure if she had had any food. She is sleeping now. Have a great day.

Glad to hear Kylee made it through the night. That was a critical period.

A dose reduction is called for, especially since Kylee has had lower BG experiences before the hypo.

Thank you for staying up last night. I appreciate it. Yes, a dose reduction seems like it will be the answer. Did you read that all this happened because I shot a low number and it caused the huge drop. I messed up. I will PMPS test and post before I shoot. Should I go back to the FF Classic can food with a little DM canned? I fed her The high carb and a little of the DM can. She is sleeping. Wished I was. Have a good afternoon. Thx again Jeff.

For now, as long as she's in safe numbers, you want to go back to feeding what you had been feeding before all this.

She doesn't need the higher carb food at this time

Yeah, but I was pretty tired!

No worries about keeping me up.....I'm a late night person anyway (usually) and when there's an emergency on the board, most of us will stay as late as necessary to make sure the cat is OK

We're all so glad that both Kylee and you are well. Take care of your own health as well - you can't care for her if you're not okay. So good that she's in the hands of a loving family who will care for her.

When we save a kitteh on the forum, it makes not only our day, but our week. That's why we are here.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

I saw the dosing mistake. Stuff happens. Theresa and I share Leo's duties. We have a printed sheet in the kitchen with several columns. Our method:
    - test BG, determine dose
    - write BG and upcoming dose on the sheet
    - apply dose, while feeding
    - immediately put checkmark on paper next to dose, after dose is applied

That way no accidental second dose. And if we are dead tired, we know for sure if Leo got dosed or not.

Please consider removing your third food column, and just putting food annotations in the right-most column. It should condense your SS a little.

And KUDOS to you. You are now on a spreadsheet, and following a path of making your kitteh healthy.

Call this a public service announcement, if you will.

Something needs to be said here for the benefit of newbies or those who just happen to read this thread because it's easy to get the wrong idea from what's been posted today. I do not wish to provoke comment or discussion, nor place blame. My intention is purely to note this was not the way to handle what happened last night for the benefit of those who were not here at the time. Kylee made it through the night... call it divine intervention or sheer luck... whatever you want. We're all breathing a HUGE sigh of relief because the outcome could have been very different.

For the record, I have placed the link to yesterday's emergency in the first post of this thread. That way those reading after the fact will not only be able to see the whole picture, but can learn from the experience.

    'Nuff said...

Kylee did well all day. Her AM BG was 97. Fed her mostly FF Classic. She ate +2 1/2 hours ago. Tested at +11 101. She got so spoiled by me bringing her food up to her bedroom that she won't go downstairs to eat her dinner.
I would like her to stay on schedule. So I would Reduce the dose to .5 from 1unit If I am to give her a shot? What should I do please?

Renee, I see a PMPS of 101 on Kylee's spreadsheet.

Did you administer any insulin? If so, how much?

If you did give insulin tonight, please get a +1 and +2.

If you haven't given insulin yet, I would skip tonight's shot for no other reason than to err on the side of caution following the extremely low numbers last night. Skipping would also allow you to get some uninterrupted and worry-free sleep. If she needs it, you can always resume insulin in the morning.

101 is recorded in the PMPS column (+12).

What's her BG at +12 (PMPS)? An hour can make a big difference.

No I did not shoot. 1) She has not eaten her evening meal. 2) I was advised to get help before shoot. Good, no shot. Thank you. I was reading all day on here and am reading for bed.

Her previous shot was last night when I made a mistake and gave her shot to her and her numbers were 54. So it actually has been 24 hours since her last shot. (PMSP)

LOL! You lost us all when you talked about a +11 of 101 (should be +23) and then switched to talking about a +24.

    Anyway, NO SHOT tonight.

Please post for guidance before you give any insulin in the morning.

    Get some sleep!

To update the spreadsheet correctly enter
    • 101 @ +23 in the +11 column
    • 90 @ +24 in the PMPS column
