Does anyone have experience with Ketone Acidosis??

I'm going to be speaking about this condition with my Vet on Monday. I want to be armed with information from people and their kitties that have gone through it. I know it's life threatening.
What brings it on? Is it 'normal' in a regulated cat (I know that it's not really normal at any level, but you get my point)? What was done to address the issue? Outcome??
Thanks for any insight. She was being boarded at my vets which this occurred, and I know he's going to be very defensive. I'd like to be armed with knowledge.

 

Usually it's triggered by high bg, too little insulin and not eating properly. Sometimes there's infection as well. You can test for ketones at home either with urine strips or a ketone blood meter.

The 'recipe' for 'Diabetic Ketoacidosis' is 'not enough food + not enough insulin + infection/inflammation/stress'. Without proper treatment, it can be fatal. It usually takes many days to even weeks to fully recover. If it's the vet's fault, they need to repeat bloodwork free for you for at least 3-4 months to be sure kitty's electrolytes stay balanced and kidneys are fully functioning.

 

The tech that was watching her over the weekend fed her high carb food (she was being fussy and not eating) and she 'loved it and ate it all'. No surprise there! I am looking at her chart, and it looks like they skipped or reduced her insulin during this time frame too. It doesn't make sense to me.
Just an FYI - she did not survive it and passed on Wednesday.

One more thing: she had a full blood workup in September and all of her numbers were good. She had no ketones in her blood.

 

Ketones can develop suddenly. So sorry that happened.

 

So the root cause could be a 'random' buildup of ketones?

Ketones can develop in matter of hours so them not being there with the last bloodwork doesn't mean anything.

It’s not really random but it can be sudden. The causes are mentioned above.

 

My sweet Uno developed keto acidosis after having surgery on his ear. He was diabetic but we did not know this when he went in for the surgery. I believe the pre-surgery fasting, stress from surgery and his undiagnosed diabetes brought on the severe DKA episode that unfolded after we took him home. Very scary, but fortunately the vet was able to save him. I still have nightmares about it. I'm so sorry to hear your sweet kitty didn't make it. Much love and hugs to you <3

 

I am sorry for the loss of your kitty. No advise on the DKA.

 

My kitty was diagnosed last weekend and was in the hospital for 2.5 days. I’m so sorry you are going through it. For me, River was diagnosed with diabetes only when it got to the point of DKA.
She lost A TON of weight. She was drinking water like crazy. She wasn’t eating. But what really caused it? I have no idea. Wish our kitties could talk to us.
