Can tinned fish wet food effect blood sugars

Hi guys just wondering can wet tinned fish food cause BG to go higher?
I've had a few cans of butcher's haddock and ocean fish which six has possibly been eating and he's been getting a few more blue numbers.
Could this affect it at all? I've read a few undecided opinions that it may or may not?

 

Interesting question! My first instinct would have been to say that no, fish is pure protein so shouldn't be any different to other foods you give - but maybe have a closer look at the label on the tin and see if there are any other ingredients that would be more likely to raise bg?

Tin wise is seems to say the same for the fish as for the meaty one. Can't see any difference really

It may not be the fish that's doing the blues but just interesting that they came about the same time as the fishy food lol

That's an interesting read and appears that it might influence BG levels to a certain degree.

I may hold off feeding the fishy food for a week and see what happens then.

 

Yes, keep off the fish for a few days and see what happens. As you know, other factors can affect bg as well as food so if you do rule the fish out you can think about other possibilities - if necessary.

 

Yeah definitely worth trying. He's not going much higher and could possibly just be a coincidence but would be intreintere to see if it does make a difference at all.

 

Yes, indeed. Some cats will have spikes in blood glucose from fish. ...I had thought this was probably not that common; but just recently a number of people on other forums (UK'ers in particular for some reason!) have reported higher numbers if their cats eat fish, or just specific kinds of fish.

Food intolerances in cats are not at all unusual. Beef is a really common one. Then there's chicken, fish, egg, soya, grain.....

I'm going to do a little experiment and see what results I get taking the fishy food off him for a week and see if numbers go back down. Will be interesting too see.

 

Well, I have learned that EVERYTHING increases the BG..it's a matter of timing at which the BG rises..(IMO after much trial and error) My question differs somewhat..When wanting to raise the BG when 70-80 late at night due to wanting to get a few minutes of sleep, I give a little chunk chicken breast + 2-3 green beans, because I did not think a "sudden" rise was more beneficial. However, I am wondering..Would it be better to give 1/2 tsp karo to raise it quickly and then await the normal rise that will occur with Vetsulin?? I hope I am being clear.,i.e., When giving the chicken and green beans, the BG goes down over nxt 2 hours..but by 6 am FBG may go up to 400+...And so, I am wondering of karo is fast acting and short acting, should I give karo instead of Chicken and green beans? I am now thinking that ,my way of lowering the BG (since chicken/protein0 absorption is much slower) is causing the FBG at 6 am to go so high. Thanks for reading!!
