Hello! I've been giving my elderly cat Akie adequan injections subq once a week...but JUST noticed that in her latest prescription it says "twice a week." I will of course check with the vet, but wanted to ask if this is standard for cats with pretty bad arthritis? Akie is 16 yo, and xrays showed arthritis in several parts of her body -- knees, hips, back etc. She walks with a limp, poor baby, but otherwise seems okay (aside from her dry eyes, for which we're giving optimmune) and seems to be a happy little purrball. Her bloodwork is normal, good appetite, poops beautifully, playful and very sociable. Thank you.

Adequan is usually prescribed twice a week for 4 weeks, then once a week for 4 weeks, then once a month for maintainace. I give it 1-2 times a week since my cat has advanced arthritis.

Thanks, JanetNJ. So the twice a week is probably okay in Akie's case too, since she too has advanced arthritis. We did initially begin with the regimen you mention (twice a week for 4 weeks etc), but she did not get better.

She may need a bit longer of a loading dose then.

She's been on adequan for almost a year -- once a week for some months now.

Aww. Sorry to hear that. Well, maybe that'll be true of Akie too (I hope?), now that warm weather is 'round the corner. Thank you, @JanetNJ, for your input.

Hi! Sorry I just saw this--
I sometimes dose every 4 days in the winter or if I feel the boys are not moving well. Closer than 4 days apart from my understanding is wasteful.
I have however found that when they need it 4 days apart for a few shots they seem to be fine and I can go back to weekly. It is not harmful and I have never heard of any negative side effects we sort of go with what they need.
