If anyone needs me, I'll be yelling it from my rooftop! So proud of this good boy! He's been so patient and is a totally different cat than when he was diagnosed. He's happy, healthy, and has a lust for life again. I'm so incredibly thankful for everyone on this forum who rooted us on, held my virtual hand when needed, and talked me off the ledge when I felt like I was losing my mind. I'm convinced that we wouldn't be where we are today without the wealth of knowledge and compassion shared here.
Yay!!! Congratulations! He took his time weening off that last drop, but you got him there. Well done! A few things to remember: - low carb wet food. ALWAYS. Kitties can come out remission far too easily, so be vigilant and if you ever need to switch foods, do your research first. - keep testing. I recommend once/week for life. Some folks will go to once every two weeks, or once/month, but when they fall out of remission it's usually fast, and you want to catch it as quickly as possible, so I recommend once/week. If you ever get a number that's out of range, test more. -don't procrastinate if you suspect a problem. Any health problems - off to the vet right away. And if the numbers start to rise, you'll want to re-start insulin as soon as you can. the second diagnosis is much harder to get them back into remission, and the longer you wait, the harder it is. - take care of his teeth. Dentals are expensive, but worth every penny if they keep our cats off insulin! May Gato have a long and healthy remission and many happy sunbeam filled days! Please keep logging in and help out folks who are new. This forum keeps going when folks who have received help pay it forward to others. Getting spreadsheets set up, figuring out home testing, choosing food...there is a lot to do around here, and when everyone helps out, we can make a difference for more kitties and caregivers. Again, congratulations on all of your hard work and on Gato's remission! You did a great job taking care of him!!!
The base is a can of weruva cats in the kitchen lamburgini. We used tiki mousse sticks as icing (which they don't like alone so we have a surplus that I try to mix in with food). I peppered some shredded chicken from his testing bag, crumbled orijen original treats on top, with purebites minnows dotting the side and crushed bonito flakes on the bottom. It stinks to high heaven but they all really enjoyed it!
Awesome and creative! But I want to know... Did he share with his siblings? Did they love it? Oops. Edited to add that I just saw that he shared it with his siblings and they all loved it! Don't know how I missed that one the first time around.
We let Gato chomp at the cake on the plate for a while, but when they started getting slappy we divided it up in their usual bowls so they could all enjoy with chaos.
It's going to take me a while to get used to the smell of wet cat food. whew.. stinks to high heaven is right!!
