My 16-year-old cat is OTJ. He was on Prozinc. I’m doing the testing as we speak but I have an out for track and I don’t know the numbers I’m looking for or what it needs to be gauged anymore. Been a long while since we tested and I just got out of a brutal relationship. I’m pretty sure he typo, he’s meowing incessantly does not want to be picked up and that’s never the case. Testing now what are the numbers I’m looking for? Thank you edit I do have a hypo tool kit

Are you using a human or pet meter?

Pet meter hypo can be below 74 (might be 72/76, I’ll have to look)

If he's not on insulin, there's no danger of a hypo

On a pet meter, the "time to act" is under 68

Glad everything is okay as far as BGL goes. Could he be sick in some other way? Will he eat or drink?

Not sure of your question, but the code on the meter should match the code on the bottle of strips.

Normal blood glucose is 68-150 on the AT

He is eating some and drinking a lot, he’s been listless all day but when I picked him up this evening he was 100% against it and that is not him

Watch him closely.....if he stops eating, it may be that he has some pancreatitis which would make it painful if you picked him up near his abdomen.

There may be other things going on too, but his BG looks OK

    Praying for your furbaby!

I hope he is feeling better soon! Can you consult with your vet tomorrow just in case there is a problem? It does sound like he doesn’t feel his best.

Apologies for the panicked questions, I need to get back into this forum and write down the numbers that are good and bad. I sincerely appreciate all of you for being there. Everything in my life has been chaotic and it’s finally calm down. But this cat is the most important thing in the world to me

No worries....that's what we're here for!

We'd rather have you ask if there's a problem than assume there isn't and find out you're wrong the hard way!

Thank you it’s this kitty love that keeps me sane. This guy has been a godsend since day one. I adopted him when he was 13 years old. Much love for you and your kitty too!

I would test him or have him tested for ketones ASAP.

    Signs of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
    • Drinking excessive amounts of water OR no water
    • Excessive urination
    • Diminished activity
    • Not eating for over 12 hours
    • Vomiting
    • Lethargy and depression
    • Weakness
    • Breathing very fast
    • Dehydration
    • Ketone odor on breath (smells like nail-polish remover or fruit)

Do I need to worry about kitty developing ketones if kitty is OTJ (off the juice) or when blood sugar numbers are not high?
Yes, even if a cat is not on insulin, he is still a diabetic, and it is possible that ketones and DKA can develop especially if he is skinny and not eating right. Sometimes, cats blood sugar goes into the "normal" range for the wrong reasons (like poor appetite or illness) and they actually still do need insulin to help them gain weight, heal and prevent ketones.

More information than you probably ever wanted to know about ketones and DKA:
Ketones, Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), and Blood Ketone Meters

If he's walking like he's drunk, it may be something else beside diabetic related. Could he have gotten into anything toxic? Any plants in the house?
