Tomorrow marks a month since Jack the Cat has had any insulin.

I am so grateful to this group for guiding us on that journey. It literally took three weeks from the time I found this forum until he was off insulin. My heart just swells!

When he was diagnosed back in April, he was so stressed that he lived under my bed for weeks. I was able to get him to eat and finally get on the bed instead of being under it. And he would not come out of my room, except to go to the litter box. Since he has been off the juice, I've got my silly Jack the Cat back. He has come out of the bedroom, found all of his old favorite sleeping places and has even started walking on his toes again!

I've been testing him weekly and he has great numbers.

So my concern obviously is this sustainable?

Other than testing every week and monitoring his weight is there anything else I should be doing to make sure he doesn't have to go back on insulin?

Are there, in your experience, any triggers that would cause a relapse?

    Any insight is most appreciated.

    Jane and Jack the Cat.

Some cats stay in remission for many years. Keep him on low-carb wet food, test from time to time, and enjoy it for however long it lasts!

I agree with FurBabiesMama. Idjit went OTJ very quickly also, and like a doofus I didn't wean him off the insulin correctly. So, the specter of falling out of remission is always there for me. But, it's been over a year, Idjit is....well, Idjit, goofy, imperious, spoiled and bar minor ailments now and then, is healthy as a horse (big as one too!)

Per my reading, infection and dental issues can knock them out of remission. So, get that dental exam done every year. I never took any other cats, or the dog, to have a dental before Idjit, now it's part of our annual routine. When he visits the vet, they check his anal glands and have to express them sometimes (which he probably does not thank them for) and one of our members has to take her male in for periodic expression as his BG climbs up there when he really needs it done. So, annual exam, dental exam, and just being the good and watchful mom that you are.

I am very thankful for every day off insulin, I do watch him carefully for any eating or peeing changes and will be so much more prepared if we ever have to go back on the juice again.
Jane, let us just celebrate that we are so fortunate to number among the ones that have helped our kitties attain remission, for "however long it lasts".

I agree with others. Maintain a low carb diet religiously, have frequent dental checks , treat any issues immediately and treat any illnesses or issues like ongoing diarrhoea, vomiting straight away. Also don’t let the vet use any products with steroids in it unless it’s life threatening.
I had Sheba in remission for 2 1/2 years but she had pancreatic flares and then diarrhoea which we couldn’t find a cause and she fell out of remission. Later found the diarrhoea cause was food allergy.
    Enjoy the remission!

I second being cautious of steroids! We just had that experience where I was giving Kyo some medicine for her ear infections which contained a steroid and it elevated her BG to almost 300 and she usually reads in the 40s without insulin on my human meter! Had to support her with some insulin until it ran out of her system. She's back to her normal self and been reading great, but it definitely made me aware of how drastic and how fast steroids effected her. I hope our kitties enjoy the falls for as long as they can!! :joyful::D
