On the Food Chart Phos. is written as mg /KCals I don't know how to convert it to a % I know for the Kidney disease it should be below 200 the lower the better.

Do you have any idea how to tell if it's low phos ??

Most useful info! Thanks a bunch! This helps my boys decide what they want me to order. I'm assuming the salmon only formula(12% carbs) is the formula that doesn't include whitefish. The other salmon formula is the one that includes whitefish, coming in at 5% carbs? I just happened to get my shipment of salmon formula today. I didn't realize it was that high in carbs! You just saved my boys from some unhappy numbers! Thanks so much!

Edit to add: I just went to Dr. Elsey's website. I didn't realize they have a new formula which is the salmon only single source protein. This has to be the 12% carb formula. The cans I received today should be the 5% salmon formula, as it contains turkey liver as well.

I contacted the company for samples. However, they sent samples of the dry food. I didn't clarify that I wanted cans. They may offer samples of the cans. It'd be interesting to find out. BTW my cats adore Dr. Elsey's in every way, shape and form!

I wish we weren't scatter to all ends of the earth and it didn't cost $$ to ship. I would just buy a case to split.

The website says Petco, Petsmart and Pet Supplies Plus all carry it but not sure if they carry the wet food.

I ordered a case of turkey on Chewy's, and hope to goodness Tina likes it. She is such a chicken girl, but I sure liked the phos and carb content of the turkey.
She keeps wanting what the other cats eat, and I'm going to make her believe this new food is it! I hope it works.
I feel bad that she only eats one variety of food, even though she is happy with it - Weruva Paw Lickin' Chicken. I do have a boy who has never turned anything down. The food won't go to waste!
    Thank you for posting Jamie:)

I received samples of the wet Dr Elsey 2 months ago, and Macka loved them all! I think they're actually pretty tasty.

    I found this information.

What is a good phosphorus level in cat food?
The recommended phosphorus range on a dry matter basis for cats with CKD is 0.3-0.6%.

It looks like the Phos in Dr. Elsey's canned food is way too high.As far as I can tell all the flavors are High in Phos.

The turkey is 1.08 % that's much higher than what's recommended

    • People sometimes think that if a food does not mention phosphorus on the label, it must not contain any. This is virtually impossible, especially if the food contains animal-based protein, as most cat foods do. As outlined in the table above, any American food labelled as an adult maintenance food must contain at least 0.5% phosphorus on a dry matter analysis basis and many foods contain far more than this.

    Thank you!
.82 is the dry matter basis for phosphorus on the Weruva Paw Lickin' Chicken (Tina's staple) - so even that's higher than .6%, and that was the lowest I could find without going to a carb laden kidney diet. Maybe I need to start all over with my search. It already drove me nuts once!! I did find some fish with lower phosphorus, but I don't like feeding fish. And her phosphorus level isn't actually high (it's mid range), if that matters at all.

Chewy.com has a money back guarantee. They'll even pay to ship back, but most times they just tell you to donate it to the humane society or shelter.

It's a nice way to try products...Luci has turned up her nose to several products - Chewy has been great about every one of them!

I agree, you can hardly beat Chewy's service - personal emails to questions asked, etc. I'll have to decide if I'll return, or keep it for my civvies. I have one boy who eats anything though, and thankfully no kidney disease.
At one point, I believed under 1% phosphorus was ok. I need to clear my brain and start fresh.

Ravan's Phos is the same as Tina's. I give him Calcitriol 2 X a week & add binder to any food that's over 200 Phos. It's important to make sure the Phos does not go up.

Yep. The animal shelter kitties are always in need. I gave them tons of food, meds, litter, fluids and the weigh scale (things that I couldn't ship $$ to people here) after Gizmo passed. The scale was the item they seemed most grateful for.
