Hi, I'm new here, but I've been posting on Facebook. My Jacky was diagnosed after I took him to our vet because he was going outside the box. He's bossy with my two female cats and I assumed it was territorial and I was hoping we could calm him down with some kitty cat Prozac. I was surprised to find out he was diabetic. Looking back now I can see symptoms that I didn't realize were symptoms. Drinking lots of water and large amounts of urination. Always hungry. His fur was never very soft and was especially rough over his lower back with barely any fat over his bones there.
Jacky is a big cat and he was more muscular than fat and weighed over 20 pounds. The last time he was weighed he was 18 pounds. Jacky was my late husband's baby and they loved each other a lot. My husband, Steve passed away in June and I assumed Jacky's weight loss was from getting less treats and grief. He was as lost as I was those first months without Steve.
So, here I am. I didn't want to be here, but I am determined to make sure that Jacky has the best care that I can give him. He is family. And the best care means I have to not only learn to do things I never wanted to do, but I need to learn to do them well. I need lots of help. Thanks!

Hello Jacky and Jacky's Mom. Welcome to FDMB. My sincere condolences on the loss of your husband Steve, you and Jacky have had a huge hurdle to balance and peace in your lives, and now the diabetes. No, you don't want to be here, but here you are and I, for one, am very glad to meet you.

I know you have received information and advice on the FB page and perhaps we can expand on that here on the board. I do know that you will get help and great support here. There are very knowledgeable, experienced veteran members, as well as others very new to FD just as you are. Different boats, same river. I applaud your wish to learn and to do the very best you can.

To get started please set up the signature and the spreadsheet. The signature is going to provide Jacky's info with each of your posts. The spreadsheet is going to show you the trends and patterns of insulin effect on the blood sugar over time.

If you need help with the spreadsheet set up, please let us know. There are members who can assist or set it up for you.

Somewhere, either in the signature or the profile info (from: ) please let us know a geographic location. Sometimes the area and/or time zone matters. Particularly if you are in need of guidance at night, if one member can't stay online we try to find someone in a different time zone that can attend and not leave you on your own.

You have made a good start, going forward you can post in the Main Health forum HERE with questions about diet, home testing, general health issues and concerns. When we learn what insulin Jacky is/will be on, we can refer you to information in the proper insulin support group.

Very best wishes going forward :cat:

Lou is fantastic with getting everyone on board, so all that is left for me to do is echo how sorry I am for yours and Jacky's loss. But we'll all hope to help you get Daddy's boy healthy again as a wonderful tribute to his Dad.

It's a little overwhelming, and no one strives to have to poke their cat with needles all day long, but the wealth of experience here will give you the exact support you need.

Welcome to you and your handsome boy!

:p I like to think of it as "one cat short of crazy", although sometimes I'm not so sure that's true! :p
