Mav had a pretty good day yesterday! He stayed in some nice numbers for a little while last night, and it looks like his bounces are getting better.

I have my civvie, Jester booked in for his dental tomorrow a.m., he isn't diabetic, so at least I don't have to worry about the insulin, but my question is how late in the evening can he still have a snack? The vet's office said no food after 8:00 p.m. but that seems early to me, since drop off times are between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. so as long as it's in the range of 8-12 hours no food is that okay? I don't want to risk any complications, but it gets a bit tricky with our p.m. snacks. They are both so used to the routine, if I need to stop feeding Jester after 8:00 p.m. I can do that, but I suspect he'll be looking very sadly at me when I give Mav his snack and he doesn't get one.

Nice blues last night. I hope Mav heads back down today. Maybe you should call your vet and ask about the late snack.

Where I use to work it was NPO after midnight. Our vet's "surgical" schedule began around 9:30-10am. This was 10 yrs ago though. Every vet's different.
Food leaves the stomach in ~ 6-8 hours, give or take a little. The risk, vet's are trying to avoid with such a prolonged fasting, is vomiting under anesthesia. Most anesthetics eliminate the gag reflex so, if vomiting were to occur, aspiration can result. However, there are things to help prevent aspiration....specifically fasting prior to anesthesia and the cuff on endotracheal tubes. The cuff, holds the tube in place in the trachea. Kinda acts like a "balloon barrier". I'm sure you know all this already so, sorry to be a know it all:oops:
I'm sorry you're going to be a lil hungry Jester:( Better safe than sorry:)
I hope Mav can slide down for you today Christie! Have a wonderful day!:)

Sending great healing and smooth sailing for Jester tomorrow!

I'm not quite sure about NPO after 8 p.m...that seems like a long time to go without food...typically surgical patients are told nothing to eat/drink after midnight -and that's with a 7:30 start time...odd...

    Have a good evening Crista!

Thank you everyone, some of you know me too well...I'll try and not worry too much ;). I checked back with the vet tech, and she agreed his last snack at 10:00pm would be fine. I kind of mentioned since he is on wet food only, I would think the food would be past his stomach by the time the dental came around, she agreed. Only one other procedure tomorrow, they'll do it first since it's a sterile procedure (a spay) then Jester goes in. Looking forward to seeing his smiling face when I bring him home, and with fresh breath to boot :p

Mav PMPS 308, he decided to stop and ponder today.
