You have the Solostar pens. I guess we can get them here because they sell them at Marks Marine but we also can just buy the cartridges with the insulin in them that go into the pens. The Solostar I think are disposable pens. There are other pens that you don't throw out here and simply take out the used cartridge and replace it. Basically the same thing. With the pen, remove the cap and you will see the cartridge inside. Same animal just packaged differently. If they are all Solostar pens, they all have 3ml of insulin in them.

LOL! Consider yourself strangled! LOL! Seriously though, no! Ask away. The pens are 3ml of U100 insulin. The package of pens with 5 pens is a total of 15mls.

No no no , absolutely NOT strangle :bighug: It was a whole new world for me too so I totally understand . When you remove the cap there is what looks like a spongy button ... that's what you stick the needle in , just like top of vetsulin bottle .

Yes On the box from Tom he got them from Marks, says it on the box. Yes when I take off the long cap I can see the clear insulin in it. So then I just stick the syringe in that small circle of rubber or what ever it is. So how long approximately would 4 pens last @MrWorfMen's Mom

Yes it is tiny, so if people don't want to use a syringe, what do they use, so they buy little needles or whatever, where do they put them lol @Beth 73

It's good until the expiry date on the packaging as long as it's not used. How long the insulin will last you depends on the dose you are using. At one time I wasn't getting a month out of a cartridge. Later on they lasted me for months. At Tyler's current dose of roughly 0.75u, you'd get 400 shots out of a cartridge but it might lose potency before you used it all up. A cartridge should stay good about 6 months if stored in the fridge. 400 doses would last 6.6 months so any waste would be minimal.

I figured it out, when you take the top off you will see threads around the top, then I guess people would buy the needles and you screw them on. I was looking at the pictures that came with the directions @Beth 73

@MrWorfMen's Mom no rush just a couple more questions for now
I know you told me this

Of course I will help you understand the human meter. No big deal really. Normal range is 50 to 120 and you will take dose reductions at readings below 90 so you have a good cushion to avoid having Tyler going too low.
Question #1 when you said I will take dose reductions at readings below 90 do you mean if the pre shots are below 90 or if I get a 90 while testing him during a cycle

Question #2. What number would I be looking for meaning how low would he have to drop that would make me have to feed him some food.
What number would it be OK so I wouldn't have to feed him anything so that I could keep him staying in the greens.
When using a human meter do you still go by the colors and numbers that are on top of the spread sheet?

Question #3 With lantus I see that you should be sure to shoot exactly on the 12th hour, meaning if I shoot at 9 am I would definitely have to shoot at exactly 9 pm

Not like with vetsulin where I can shoot 30 minutes to an hour earlier or later

OK last question lol With lantus you first test, then shoot, then feed all within 15 minutes? Since it doesn't kick in until @+2 , so I can feed him right after the shot and during that 2 hour time frame. But most likely he will eat right after the shoot, is this correct @MrWorfMen's Mom

Any time you get a reading below 90 whether it's mid cycle or at pre-shot, Tyler would earn a reduction in dose by 0.25u.

Yes but we will have to adjust the colour coding at the top a bit. I can do that for you when you change over.

Your routine is exactly the same as it is with Vetsulin......test, feed, shoot BUT with Lantus you just need to know Tyler will eat and whether he finishes his meal or not doesn't matter. You can shoot while he is eating rather than waiting the 30 minutes.

Yes it's best to try to keep shots as close to 12 hours as possible but 30 minutes out once a day is fine or 15 minutes per shot. I don't think anyone to proclaim to be precisely at 12 hours every single time. Shooting an hour early or late can act like a dose increase or decrease but there are folks working full time odd schedules who manage so if you had to do an hour once in a while it's not a big deal.

Linda, does the 15-30 minute time apply to shooting early as well as late ? I shoot at 7:30 ...so my window if needed is from 7:00 for an early shot and 8:00 as a late shot time if needed that shot ?

@MrWorfMen's Mom just found this on some ones thread about Lantus

We test, feed, then shoot here, all within 10-15 minutes. But they don't have to eat it all right away. Lantus is much gentler. With the older harsher insulins, it was important to get all their food in early. Sounds like your vet was more familiar with the older insulins. Not uncommon by the way.

This all has to be done all within 10-15 miunutes? Really @MrWorfMen's Mom

Diane, you are driving yourself crazy with this. You test Tyler, sit his bowl down to start eating while you draw up his insulin, then shoot while he has his head stuffed in his bowl. Easy peasy and done in 5 minutes if you are speedy Gonzales like me!
