I just found out yesterday that my 1yr old female is severely diabetic. She had lost a lot of weight and wasn't eating. Then she started having a lot of blood in her urine on Friday. Blood work revealed the diabetes and anemia. I have been feeding her by hand food and water since a vet is not available in my area until Tuesday. She is now unresponsive, refusing to swallow food or water, can't stand and is generally worse in everyway. Can anyone help me. I don't know what else to try.

She may have developed ketones. Is there an emergency vet in the area? How long ago did you give insulin? Did the vet put her on antibiotics? What insulin is she on? Did the vet say if she had ketones yesterday? Do you have a copy of her lab reports? What was her blood glucose levels yesterday when she was diagnosed

Hi, I am so sorry for such a 1 year young baby kitty.

I was however wondering what the vet said about how to correct the anemia, and what is the cause for it? How much of anemia does she have?

Since if she has a lot of blood in the urine it can come from either the kidneys, the urine bladder or the urine tract.

If she is unresponsive you should really take her to an Animal Hospital ER since she might need Intensive care and a feeding tube plus more.

There are no emergency services in our area, the vet saw her Friday because of my concerns, this was her initial bloodwork. He called Saturday morning to say she's severely diabetic and that he'd see her first thing on Tuesday when the office was open to give her a shot to try and stabilize her glucose levels and then establish a course of treatment. He did put her on antibiotics although idk the name. I think she's slipping into a diabetic coma and I'm trying to pull her out of it. I need tips or help to know how. Please.

Unfortunately there are no emergency services available to our area. And unfortunately the vet did not go into detail about her blood work results, just that her glucose was very high and she was anemic. Said to continue feeding her by hand to keep her fluids and food intake maintained until he could see her on Tuesday.

She needs insulin. Can you drive anywhere with her? They should have given you the insulin on Friday. How scary I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. Is she conscious? Will she drink? Can you syringe in water?

Any emergency vets within a two hour drive? There must be SOMEWHERE.

Okay. It is so difficult then for anyone of us to help you pull her out of the unresponsiveness.

Maybe you can't leave her, but what you can do to find out of she has ketones and most likely DKA, is to go to a pharmacy and buy urine ketones test strips. But that require of course she needs to go and pee in order for you to get a fresh pee stream to hold the ketone test strip in.

I'm afraid she wouldn't survive the drive, the nearest emergency services for animals is hours away and shes too fragile. They didn't get blood work results back until Saturday and they gave me the results by phone. I have been feeding her wet food and also water by syringe in intervals all weekend. She did get better for a little while. But this morning she suddenly became unresponsive. I've upped her food and water to try and turn it around.

She may not make it through the night. I would chance the drive to the vet

At this point, if she is unresponsive, not eating, not drinking, if it is in your power to get her to the emergency vet, I would do it. The drive will be less of a danger to her than lack of emergency assistance.

Oh no! Did your kitty make it through the night??

Without insulin, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is unlikely.
Ketones, and diabetic ketoacidosis DKA) are more likely.

Wish you had found us sooner.

Thank you everyone for the support. It's been a very busy few days, I didn't mean to ignore everyone. Savannah made it through the weekend. Unfortunately she had damage to her kidneys and liver. She passed away this morning.
