Im still new at this and I finally bought a meter to test Freckles at home. She was diagnosed on 1/9/20. I gave her 1 unit of ProZinc 2 hours ago with a U40 syringe. She tested at 76 an hour after her shot. I gave her tiny bit of fancy feast with gravy and a couple drops of karo syrup. I need advice on what else I need to do. I promise I will be testing first from now on! I used ReliOn premier classic glucose meter.

Ok so let the gravy kick in. How long has it been now since the shot? Id check again at 2 hours after shot and make sure she's still ok. It may be a long night for you

You're doing great!....Hang in there! Hopefully she'll respond to the gravy and stop dropping (or come up some) but you're going to need to keep testing for awhile. We want to see her numbers either coming up or staying stable for at least 2 hours without you having to feed her anything high carb before you can relax a little.

She is reading at a 68 now. Made a mistake. Her first test was 72.

Ugh. Im so cinfused and looked at what I guess was autoprogrammed and it said 72. Her teat was 76 cause I took a picture!

OK.....another teaspoon of Gravy Lovers....by the way...the "gravy" part is where most of the carbs are. What I'd do was open the can, put the lid back down and squeeze the gravy into another bowl and then give a teaspoon or two.

Retest again in 20-30 minutes. She's still safe, but since it's still so early in the cycle and we don't know where she started, we're being extra cautious

    For anybody following along:

    PMPS...No test
    +1 76
    +2 68

Ok so she's about the same but with gravy. I'd say give more gravy and if you have any high carb treats like temptation or party mix give a few of those.

The picture you posted in the FD group said 76....but either way, she's still dropping but not terribly quickly so hang in there. You're doing fine!

Hi Melissa--If you are using a brand new meter, the 72 you see is probably the average of your two readings it remembers.

Thank you. I gave her some more food with extra gravy. Also gave her some party mix treats. I have my alarm set to retest.

Another teaspoon of gravy....you might go ahead and add a drop or two of Karo/honey/syrup...not because she's in immediate danger, but we want to get her heading in the right direction soon, especially since you will need to keep testing for at least 2 hours (once we get her going up instead of down)

You're doing good. She would be much lower of you weren't steering her up. Keep going with gravy and party mix.

My cat had a very low hypo last night. In an hour she had to have seen entire can of gravy lovers and a half can of Friskies with gravy. It happens.

When you get more experience and testing data on her, you will love those numbers....but without any previous testing, we want to be safe first.

Once things settle down, we'll want you to get a spreadsheet started and keep track of her numbers but I understand that right now, that's not the important thing!

It's important enough to me. I'm never shooting her without testing first again.

You're certainly not the first and unfortunately not the last. When you know better, you do better!!

Here are the Instructions on setting up the FDMB spreadsheet when you're ready (if you need help, send me a message and I'll be happy to set it up for you)

You can also take the 911 off. It's good to get someone's attention quickly but once you have eyes on you, go ahead and take it off. Just click on "thread tools" and choose "no prefix".....that way, IF you do need to use the 911 again, people won't think it's the same one.

    Yep...you did fine!!

Also, when you have time, you could fill out your Signature (the information you see below each of our comments)

Click on your sign on name at the top right and there's a drop down menu...choose "Signature"....that opens a new box for you to enter information like:

Your name/Cats name, age, sex, date of diagnosis, type of insulin, type of meter, type of food, any other health problems or meds? and a general location.

Then you'd put the link to your spreadsheet in and "save"

That way we don't have to ask the same questions over and over again and can check your spreadsheet to give you the best advice going forward.

We are at a 97 now! I don't know if I did bad or good. I'd rather her be high than low. I let her eat the rest of the fancy feast with gravy. I gave her a few drops of karo and a few more treats. My mom mentioned honey will raise it faster. So I gave her a little honey. I hope that is ok.

If he's still safe in 30, I'd get 1 more an hour after that so that it would be a total of 2 hours since the last time he got high carb food

I know it's tough! All of us have had more than our fair share of PJ parties!!

If you can, set an alarm and grab a quick nap

Hi Melissa! You are already getting great help, and you are doing all the things. You rock for taking such good care of your kitty. I just wanted to say I'll be up for another three hours, and I'll keep my eyes on the forum if you need any more help. I'm hoping since his reading is coming up, we're headed in the right direction.

Yup, pre-shot tests are important, and this is why. But you were smart to test after, see the problem, and help your baby.

Holding pretty steady, but I do think the safest thing would be to test again in an hour. I know that's hard when you work in the morning, but you want to make sure he doesn't slip again.

Been there, done that! Went through the exact same thing when Billy had his BGL first trip to the 50s. Scared my fiance and me to bits, but Billy did fine and so will Freckles, because her mama is awesome.

How long has it been since she's eaten? Maybe it's time for a little of her normal food, as long as it's at least 2 hours before your AM test. She's still hanging in there, but if she'll eat a little, you should be good to get some sleep. You might want to wait a minute and see If Chris and China has some advice, as they are more experienced than I am.

I think you're past the danger point if you haven't fed her in the last 2 hours....leave some food down for her and get what little sleep you can!

Great job on the Signature and spreadsheet too!

If she's not over 200 in the morning and you can't keep an eye on her, I'd probably just skip. I'd also suggest that you drop to .5 units until you get some data on her and see how she's really doing.

There's lots of information on the ProZinc forum as well as a Beginners Guide to ProZinc and Protocol for ProZinc

Great job Melissa! You just experienced your first "pajama party" ;) Been there, done that, and someone held my hand the entire way. Thank GOD for the angels willing to stay up with us as we go through those very scary times. If you're at all like me, I'd be surviving off a lot of :coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee: today! LOL

I hope you managed to get some sleep :bighug: Again, GOOD JOB Momma!! ;)

I am so tired. So tired im annoyed. Lol! My patients today are already on my nerves. Calling 4 times back to back 5 minutes after our opening time. I need a caffeine IV!

Update on the beast: She would NOT let me test her. So no insulin. I got her to eat. She also would NOT take her medicine this morning. There is a house full to watch her today though. Maybe tonight she will let me. .... lol

Honestly, after our pajama party, it might be just as well to skip this morning. Don't be surprised if her BGL is higher this evening. Not to worry, it can take time for readings to calm back down after a skipped dose.
Do keep an eye out for signs of ketones. You might want to test her for ketones. You can either use a meter that tests for ketones in the blood (strips are expensive) or you can get ketostix at a pharmacy and test her urine (very inexpensive). My Billy did not have any ketone trouble from skipping a dose, but a skipped dose can trigger ketones, so it's a good thing to check.

I see she has hyper-T also.

We use Lantus and I don't know if it is the same with Freckles and the Prozinc.

Simba got a severe Hyper-T tumor too that had grown and developed over a long time and toward the end months, basically from the 5 last month before he had his Radioactive Iodine treatment to get rid of the tumor, he started to become so so highly over sensitive to any insulin, that he started getting hypos from basically any low insulin dose.

So perhaps that's something that can affect the whole thing, you should consider too.
