First off, I will quickly update on Mouzer. Mouzer is doing well and normal and just keeping him on the fancy feast and friskies pates is working.

I have a kitty named Daddy Blu who has been taking liquid prednisone 1ml a day since October 2019, due to polyps in the nose, and the vet said this is the only thing we can do. I woke this morning and he is flopping at his back end like Mouzer did when I first found out that Mouzer had diabetes. I checked Daddy Blu's bg and it is at 244. I checked it one more time and it is at 245.

Daddy Blu has been running very thin and that is why I first took him to the vet, along with that he has crackling noises as he breathes. He put on a little weight when we got him on the prednisone but not much weight and now he is back to being very thin. At the time of October 2019, he stayed one week at the vet's office with getting special care. His bloodwork was all good and no diabetic numbers.

I just ordered Zobaline for the flopping wobble he has now while trying to walk but it wont be here until March 24 - 26, so next week. My Lantus I have on hand is from October 2018, so too old to use. The vet's office wont open until 8am, it is nearing 7am now, and I have to call to see if I can get Daddy Blu in to see him but I will not trust a vet's dose for insulin because I learned not to trust a vet's dose when Mouzer needed Lantus and I will have to come back for help with that ... but first I want to say more to see what you think about this and what I should do...

I would not even take Daddy Blu to the vet for this but I am going to need insulin right away, at least to buy one pen until I can get it through Mark's Marine Pharmacy. I can just use Mouzer's prescription that Mark's has on hand and reorder the insulin.

I would not yet get insulin but this Daddy Blu has a dizzy like look in his eyes and I am not sure if I should just try making sure he gets no dry food and only eats the Fancy Feast pate or if I should hurry and get a script to go pick up some insulin real fast.

Do you think I should get him into the vet and get a script to pick up insulin and get him on insulin quickly or should I just first try the food control and take him off of the prednisone and should I order the insulin from Mark's? I do not know what to do about his need for prednisone and the vet has stated that prednisone is all we can do for his polyps in the nose.

    Thank You!

I think you need a vet visit. His numbers may be elevate but you don't know if it's diabetes induced by the steroids, a dental inflammation, an infection, etc. A fructosamine test wouldn't hurt, either.

Depending on the breed (or combination of breeds) of Daddy Blu, nasal issues may be more or less common. Is there any chance there is an ENT specialist/vet school in your area that can weigh in on whether steroids are the only option?

I do not think Daddy Blu has an infection of any kind and he has no dental issues. I just spent $2500 between October and November 2019 at the vet with him and we ran bloodwork, chemistry profile, xray and all looked very good. He was placed on the prednisone at that time with 1ml a day and for the polyps in his nose.

I am pretty sure it is steroid induced. Mouzer's was steroid induced due to depo-medrol.
If I can get Daddy Blu into the vet today, I can request a fructosamine test but I am sure the vet will enjoy declaring I must now pay for the whole bloodwork up done all over again, so I guess I will have to pay that again.

I am not sure but with the bg at 244, I really do not see why I need the fructosamine test done because I can see diabetic numbers with the bg test. I do not understand the need for the extra test, so maybe you can explain, so I can understand???

Should I rush to get him on insulin with the 244 reading or should I first try food control and not giving the prednisone -- because with this bg number, the vet is going to insist the insulin and I dont trust vets with their decisions on this matter. I have learned not to trust them in this.

As for the ent specialist/vet school, I am not seeing one listed in my area. I do not see where the prednisone has even helped this issue, so I do not mind taking him off of it and later asking the vet if there is something else that can be given that is not a steroid.

It is now 15 minutes and the vet office should be opening and I will call to see if I can get Daddy Blu in today but still am not sure if I should rush for the insulin or try the food control and no prednisone first, if the vet wants to get him on insulin. I do not even want the vet to administer any insulin because I do not trust the vet's dosing. If it must be done, I prefer to do it with the help of this message board because the people here know more about this than the veterinarians know. I am also kind of scared of the vet because he is quick to say a kitty should be put down and I want to make sure if it is just diabetic numbers, Daddy Blu is given a chance.

I did just remember that my FatBoy kitty had a bladder infection and was wobbly and his bg did go up because of that, so I will have to do the bloodwork all over again, in case Daddy Blu could have a bladder infection. So, as soon as the vet opens I will call in hopes to get him in today. I will come back here and update once I find out what we do find at the vet's office ... still questioning the rush for insulin if it is found no infection and is diabetes ... or should I try to no prednisone and food control first? We did food control on FatBoy while not being sure if infection caused his issue with bg numbers and wobbling - first.

Thank you very much for your time this morning and your quick response. I just had to put Daddy Blu to sleep. It was neurological and being as the prednisone has not helped his nose issue, our vet thinks hey most likely had a brain tumor. Our vet did not price gouge us, so at least he was being honest. Again, thank you so very much. I appreciate you.
