Hello, I am at a loss here....

Hello I am Anastasia, with my 10 month old Mao whom I neutered this Monday. The vet had him tested before the operation finding his glucose 366 and he told me that he expected it to be higher than normal due to stress but he found it to be too high even stressed. He didn't find glucose in his urine though which I am choosing to believe it is kinda good, but he went on to check his fructosamine and it is 332 with the limit of 300. He told me this is alarming news and I should test my baby's blood sugar 4-5 times at home (of course following his instructions as to when he should eat etc) by myself in a stress free enviroment in order to see what is going on. But he urged me to hurry up and do it. My cat is like stressed even now due to him being neutered and he isn't really responding well to the pen syringe (excuse my english isn't my native language). I can't seem to get him to sit to puncture either his ear or his paw. I am very stressed and dunno what to do. I called another vet and she told me the same thing. That my cat MIGHT have diabetes but she told me also to not stress him again by getting him again to the vet and that the best solution is that I should measure his blood to be sure. I dunno what to do really I tried warming up his ear, I tried singing to him hugging him talking to him. Although he comes to me as soon as he hears or god forbbid sees the measuring equipment he leaves in a second. Help please

 

One thing that will help is treats! We recommend using either a freeze dried protein treat (they are generally a single ingredient like chicken) since there are no carbohydrates in this kind of treat. If your cat likes human food, that should be fine, as well. Some members will cook chicken for their cat or we had one member who used shrimp. Any time you test, regardless of whether the test is successful or not, Mao gets a treat. You want to positively reward his behavior.

I would also check to see with the gauge of the lancet you're using is. You want to use a lancet that is around 28 gauge. This is a relatively "thick" lancet. It can take a couple of weeks for the capillary bed, especially if you're testing Mao's ear, to build up so it's easier to get blood. Once that happens, you can use a thinner lancet (e.g., a 30 gauge).

Always aim for the sweet spot warm the ears up first, you can put rice in a sock and put it in the microwave, test it on the inside of your wrist to be sure it's not to hot, like you would test a babies bottle. You can fill a pill bottle with warm water and roll it on the ears also.Just keep rubbing the ears with your fingers to warm them up

6. As the ears get used to bleeding and grow more capilares, it gets easier to get the amount of blood you need on the first try. If he won’t stand still, you can get the blood onto a clean finger nail and test from there.
When you do get some blood you can try milking the ear.
Get you finger and gently push up toward the blood , more will appear
You will put the cotton round behind his ear in case you poke your finger, after you are done testing you will fold the cotton round over his ear to stop the bleeding , press gently for about 10 or 20 seconds until it stops
Get 26 or 28 gauge lancets
A lot of us use the lancets to test freehand not the lancing device
I find it better to see where I'm aiming
Look at the lancet under a light and you will see one side is curved upward, that's the side you want to poke with

Yes we tested him and he was fine. I had some friends over to help me. But now he is vomiting. I got him again to a vet clinic to have an X-Ray and an ultrasound ( I think that is the correct word ) to check his insides, if he ate something bad or whatever. His check was more than fine, so I don't know why he was vomiting Anyway, with the advice of the vet, I got him hypoallergic food in case he developped an allergy. We'll see how this will go. he had 91 , 103, 96, 122, 98, 117.

 

OK, that's good. I hope you find the cause of vomiting and he will be fine soon! He might not be diabetic but feel free to ask questions if you want to.
