Hi all I'm back. Topaz is still my diabetic, feral cat and doing as well as can be expected on Humulin N. If you can't get in my profile- a quick update. She is 14 years old, has been on low dosage Humulin N and more or less controlled when i can catch her and her shots are regulated. She is on fancy feast classic, and EVO. Now the question. She is very arthritic and just back from the vet who gave me six dosages of Adequin. Google shows me it is used on cats but really is used on horses and dogs and somewhat experimental for cats. I could find nothing about using it for a diabetic cat. Anyone have the answer?

I was also perscribed it for my diabetic cat Kitty. It is used off label in cats. I have seen others within the forum that use Adequin for their cats.

What was the dosage and usage when you had it? I have to use it for the next five days but google posts say it is used every other day.

My acro Charlie may be starting Adequan soon. It has shown to be very effective dosed sub-q for cats (as opposed to intra-muscular with dogs and horses), and that is the current preferred way to give it. My vet is at the western states vet conference this week and called me from there today after attending a seminar on pain management! she said that she would recommend starting it at once or twice a week the first couple of weeks, then once a week for 4 weeks, then once every other week, then possibly just once a month after that. But ECID and you have to see how they react to it. I think daily for 5 days sounds way too frequent! There is nothing in the studies that shows it is contraindicated for diabetics or acromegalics.

My Champ is on Adequan. It's usually given twice a week for four weeks, once a week for four weeks, and then once a month thereafter. You give 2 mg per pound of weight. If using a U-100 insulin syringe, 2 mg equals 2 units. My cat weighs 18 pounds so his dose for each shot is 36 mg, or 36 units. Since I use the 3/10 cc syringes for his insulin shots (which only go to 30 units), I had to get some 1/2 cc syringes (which hold 50 units). You give the insulin shot on one side and the Adequan on the opposite site. I give him his Adequan shot at the same time as his morning insulin shot. He's so engrossed in eating, he doesn't even notice the shot, even with 36 units. You can buy the Adequan online much cheaper than getting it at your vets. Drs. Foster & Smith website is the cheapest. The canine and equine Adequan IS THE EXACT SAME, only the labeling is different. I specifcially asked my vet about this. The equine vial of Adequan is something like $41 and the canine Adequan vial is $49. Why they charge more from the canine versus the equine, I don't have a clue. You can have the people at Drs. Foster & Smith call your vet to get the prescription and they'll ship it right out. It took like three days to get to me and it had a hot pack in there to keep it from getting too cold!! Champ is really doing great on it. He's able to walk without hanging his head down anymore and he sits up straight instead of letting everything "puddle" down around him (it used to look like he was a snowman who was melting). Hope it works for you and your kitty!!
