Libby's Sammy (update below)

Sammy had trouble breathing during a dental today which led to a consult with a cardiologist. Libby's waiting for the ultrasound now. They gave lasix.
Please send healing vines, snow flakes, white light, positive thoughts and prayers...

Oh, so sorry to hear this. Sending lots of white light and healing vines for Sammy to come out of this just fine. I had a cat that had a bad heart for 12 years and she had her own cardiologist, and had lots of ultra sounds before any treatment like teeth cleaning.

i just heard from libby. sammy is staying the night at the vet's. i'm sure libby will update later.

Thanks everybody. Please keep everything coming. Ultrasound showed that Sammy is in congestive heart failure, and it is pretty late stage. He is young (about 7) and has never had any symptoms or given us a reason to check his heart/lungs. He is fighting for his life tonight. If he gets through the next 24 hours we'll have a chance... He is on oxygen and Lasix and nitroglycerin and I forget what else. He just can't breathe well. He seemed perfectly healthy this morning. ER vet said this has obviously been here for a while but the anesthesia probably pushed him past his limit. She said many cats show no outward signs of heart disease. His eyes are still bright and he purred for me, so I know he is still fighting. I came home because even leaving the oxygen cage open to visit with him seemed to make his breathing worse.

I'm choosing to hope for the best. This cannot happen again so soon after Jazzy, so he has to be ok.

Libby I'm so sorry. There are a couple of cats fighting CHF on the board and Jess and Earl I hear are the resident experts. The Lasix should start to work within 24 hours and hopefully improve from there. I bet he will be put on enapril or benazepril and possibly vetmedin. I don't know if this has been tested in cats but I saw one members cardiologist prescribed this. Bad teeth can contribute to heart issues I hear - thats what they say on the CHF forum for dogs.

I called the ER vet tonight and Sammy is stable. He is still hanging out in the oxygen cage but his breathing is less labored and he has licked at some food. I hope those are good signs that I will be able to bring him home. I don't know for how long, but I'll deal with that as we go.

His brother Mickey is affectionate and nervous tonight. Mickey is very bonded to Sammy and he knows something is wrong. Ironically, Mickey is the one that I know has heart disease. Mickey is hard to medicate (former feral) and I made the decision long ago to delay treating him until he started showing some symptoms, even though that decision might shorten his life. I've been mentally somewhat prepared for Mickey to decline suddenly. Not Sammy.

I'm drained, and I'm going to bed and hopefully in the morning everything will be better.

Keep the vines coming, Sammy is still in very guarded condition and I can't lose him.
