    HI gang
As if things couldn't get busier in my little world... toss a world class hurricane in the mix. I hope all of you who are in the North East region fared well and are ready to get back to something normal soon. We had to evacuate as the water from the bay 2 blocks from our house was more like half a block from our house and we didn't want to be scrambling out with the pets at midnight so at about 6 pm (just as things got interesting) we headed to our friends house where it was drier and she still had electric. The cats were very good (although Roxie pooped in the carrying case out of sheer fear I think) they didn't make a PEEP the entire drive (about 15 minutes) which is NOT like them so obviouslly they knew something was not right. The dog had been an antsy mess all day so we gave her some doggie downers and she was OK. The cats seemed better than I thought but now at 7am I can say they basically kept us up all night - they are exploring and crying and just not happy to be outside their space (neither of them as ever been anywhere over night except our house).
I had packed (like on Wednesday) a pet emergency bag - extra toys, food, water, containers, blankies, cat nip, meds of all kinds and had Robbies insulin all ready to go out of the fridge and into a cooler. I had extra syringes and test strips and was quite proud of myself. Of course I had to keep the test meter out so I could continue to test him but it's carrying case was right there. We made the decision to leave kind of abruptly and we also changed our destination (one friend had a spare room and electric the other had a pull out sofa and no electric - guess which we opted for?) so in the hurry to get out the door as the storm was getting worse and trees were down all over I FORGOT THE TEST KIT - SO here I am... not really able to turn around and get home (getting here was scary live wires down, tree branches falling etc.) without his testing kit. So I figure he's stressed out, has eaten a big dinner and I'm shooting him about 10 minutes late so I went with the standard amount and all seems fine - this am (just now) I gave him a tad less - he's still stressed but just to be safe since I'll have no way to check any kind of hypo situation and his numbers have been a tad wonky lately.
So all in all we are OK - prayers that our house is dry and didn't end up under 3 feet of water (I won't know till we get back later today) and that we get electric back soon! I hope you are all safe and sound and that your fur kids are doing well.

I am so sorry you were in Sandy's path, Ellen, but glad you had a safe place for you and your family to go. You know Robbie and his habits and patterns, so you should be fine with just observation this once. I think a smaller dose was wise also.

Fingers and paws crossed that your home is not damaged and that you will all be home soon.

Thank you for checking in, we do worry. It sounds just horrible.

I'm glad that you and your family are safe and have fingers, paws and eyes crossed that your home was spared.

You did a great job preparing for the storm, at least you only forgot the meter and not the insulin. You know Robbie better than anyone so you will be fine until things are back to normal. I would have reduced the dose too.

Stay safe and keep us updated please.

  4. Ellen,
So happy to see you post. As I sat here last night watch crazy Jim Cantori standing thigh-deep in water at Battery Park, and listened to the reports of 90+mph winds at the airport on Long Island and 13 foot higher than normal sea levels, I thought "god, I hope Ellen got the hell out of there". I thought of you and of Denise, knowing you both were potentially in harm's way.

Let us know how "home" fared?

    Hugs,
    Carl

    Hi gang
Thanks for caring. We made it thru the night at our friends house. I was very proud of the kitties to be sure - considering they've never been ANYWHERE they adjusted pretty well. Roxie sat in a corner up on a hamper with her back to the wall and tried to sleep until the morning when she ended up on the couch (where NO animals are ever allowed) and perched as a princess. Robbie however woke us up every hour on the hour from 2:15am on - he would roam out to the living room or den and than SCREAM as if he was being tortured. I'd run to find him and he'd see me and JOG over to me chirping away like "oh, thank God there you are I couldn't find you anywhere" I'd take him back to bed, he'd fall asleep so would I and than an hour or hour and a half later MEEEEEOOOOWEEEEEEE - good lord.
About 10 am a friend called and said that our house looked fine - so even though we didn't have electric at home we packed back up and went back. The cats were thrilled, the meter was sitting by the front door where I'd had it so I wouldn't forget it (yeah, right) - our house was fine. No trees down, nothing too bad at all - but our neighborhood took a horrible beating and there are houses about a block from ours that were totally flooded and a couple that really just had the bay running right thru them. I can't even wrap my mind around the damage sustained out here on the East End of Long Island... beaches gone, roads gone, houses washed off their foundations - nothing has hit this part of the country like this since the 1938 hurricane. I'm just so grateful we were spared but I have friends who were not so lucky and it's going to be a long time coming back. Robbie is doing OK and we are all happy to be home with electric and internet again so quickly.

What a great description of a sleepless night, Ellen. I can just see his expression.....and yours!

So glad to hear your house is fine, but yes, so incredibly sad for so many others.

So glad you were safe Ellen and your house didn't sustain damage.
Poor Robbie must have been so frightened when he was looking for "mom".

Having been through Hurr Floyd here in 1999, my heart goes out to you and Denise. Glad you're both safe and fared as well as you did... and even more glad that you got out of harms way, just in case!!!

Wishing normalcy returns to your life very soon.
