My handsome boy went to the rainbow bridge Thursday afternoon in my arms. He went for a recheck of blood work for his kidneys before Thanksgiving. The results were the same or better as last time. His blood pressure was normal and diabetes controlled. His appy was off. My boy loved to eat and adored his treats. One shake of the bag and he'd come running. He started showing no interest in both. I got him an appetite stimulant but it just wasn't doing anything. He was becoming more lethargic. I was thinking he was in pain because of his severe arthritis so I got him compounded liquid tramadol. He still wasn't showing improvement. He wasn't hiding, vomiting but still turning away from any foods. I had little plates of food all over the house. We had even gone to high carb. The last two days I noticed when he came from walking anywhere his breathing was labored and he ever so slowly lied down. Like he was trying to find a comfy position. I was preparing myself for the worst. My Princess had lung cancer and I waited too long and I'm afraid she suffered her last hour. This wasn't going to happen to Spike. The vet took an X-ray and it was bad. Spike had fluid around his heart and lungs and a tumor in one lung. She said his stomach also felt squishy so she suspected other tumors.
We went to a private room and I held him in my arms talking to him and loving him the whole time. She had given him a shot to put him in a state of euphoria. He went very peacefully at 17 years and 1 month. He will always be in my heart because of the diabetic caring bond we shared. Sometimes I was so consumed with his health I'm sure my friends thought I was going nuts. I'm glad he's not suffering and that the X-ray made the decision for me. I know he ruled my house, my heart and taught me a great deal. I thank everyone on this site for support, encouragement and their love. We are a very special group.
ps I swear to god he was walking around all his favorite spots in the house yesterday...otherwise I am a crazy cat lady.

Janice, I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember you, too, from my early days. I think it's hard to know when to let them go, as sometimes they rally, and the X ray helped you know it was time. All our GA kitties will be waiting to help Spike cross over. My heart and prayers go out to you.

I'm so sorry to hear about Spike. It's hard to let them go, even when they are so sick. Spike was a lucky guy to have such a great bean.

Janice, I am so sorry for your loss of Spike. If you are crazy, we all are crazy cat lady here. We understand that great sorrow & your feel of reluctance to let Spike go. You've gave him the greatest love, the love of letting go to free him of the physical pain. May him rest in peace & his spirit live with you forever. Take care.

I am so sorry for your loss. You and Spike were always here on the board when Bear Man and I were regulars. It is so sad when another of our Old Timers crosses. Spike was greeted at the Bridge by all of his old friends, and so many of us here will remember him and miss him. He lived a long and happy life with you, and he felt your love to the end. I believe that our kitties come back to give us a sign, so I am one of the crazy cat ladies who would believe that he was visiting his favorite spots in the house yesterday to let you know that he was OK.

My thoughts are with you. May you take comfort from your memories of your happy years together.

I am so sorry Janice. It is so very hard to lose our fur babies. Sometimes I think that diabetes is a gift that was given to us so that we could feel that special bond with our kitties, and we all know, that no matter how many purr babies we have, our sugar kitty is the one we feel the closest to, and when they need to cross the bridge, we hurt just a little bit more than usual.
My thoughts are with you. Fly free Spike! rb_icon

(((((Janice)))) I am so sorry about Spike. Although it was heartbreaking, it was good that you recognized he was suffering and helped him out of his pain. Your love for him goes on forever and I'm glad you 'heard' him wandering around your house in his favorite spots. I don't think you are a crazy cat lady. Just a very caring and deep loving cat lady. cat_pet_icon

Oh Janice, I'm so very sorry for your loss. You gave Spike the last and greatest gift you could give him, but also the most difficult. I'm certain you are not crazy, that that really was Spike in all his favorite spots yesterday, letting you know he will always be with you, and that he is feeling free of pain now. I hope you find comfort in the memories of your wonderful life together. You were lucky to have had each other.

Fly free sweet Spike. You will always be loved and remembered.

    Janice -

I am so sorry for your loss. Clearly, you were a wonderful mamabean and knew your boy well. Losing a beloved kitty is devastating; I pray you will find comfort in your sweet memories and in knowing he isn't hurting anymore.

    Hugs and Prayers -

    thank you

Thank you everyone for all of your kind words, they mean a lot to me.
Today I went to meet my older sons new kitten. What a joy he was. It was like being with a little tigger, he bounced so much. He was the busiest little boy. It helped my broken heart heal just a little. I think I'll go see him again tomorrow..

I'm sure you were well welcomed at The Bridge.

I hope Spike has a nice porch with sun shining in just right and with perfect breezes blowing past him, and a chair exactly like his favorite chair to lay on when he feels like it :), while he's waiting for you to join him one day in heaven.

Janice know that he knows how much you loved him, and that he loves you too.

I don't think you're crazy at all. It was him.

I read this with a heavy heart as Spike was such a brave, good boy, who had such a devoted loving momma bean, who did everything she could to make him well & comfortable...These cats are a Gift from God, teaching us so many lessons about loving, sharing, giving, and sacfrifice...But they are worth every single moment we spend with them, never to be forgotten. You did all you could..
I am going through similar times with Moonie now & cherish every moment we have together now..
Spike is with Princess now and all our GA babies..Fly Free Spike..you were a GREAT BOY!
Healing Hugs & Love from us!

Janice I am so so sorry. I am really proud of you for what you did for him on Thursday, I know it was so hard, I'm sure he is very thankful.

I remember back in the old days when we were all posting daily, and Spikey was always the first one up with his internal (belly) alarm clock at 5:30am. I have such good memories of him and his sweet personality. Such a good special little guy. I am so very sorry. Tears. Fly free Spike. (((Janice)))
